Instructor Cathv Bolcer F lUWvl ^11" W JO v J.V/1 A 1 Ivl vl j Many people think of "going to college" as the act of studying subjects foreign to them. As much a part of college is lear ning about one's self, and developing one's own person. McHenry County College has developed a series of small group courses, taught by MCC counselors, designed to enhance personal development in the areas of interpersonal com munications, decision making and self-direction. Through review of values, motivational patterns, strengths and com munication styles, participants examine and attempt to refine their behavior in quest of im provement in personal ef fectiveness. The personal development courses meet two particular needs. They can prove to be a first step to attending classes at MCC for those new to college life, and they can be a help to current students trying to cope with life stresses. Basically, the personal development series serves to aid individuals in knowing where they are going and in feeling good about themselves. 1 Five one-credit hour options are being offered for fall semester. They are: Human Potential, Applied Psychology for Men, Wellness, Learning Blocks and Career Develop ment. Crafts fair at the Lambs A fun filled day of recreation including a spectacular Arts & Crafts Fair and down home entertainment is planned at The Lambs Farm on Sunday, August 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival will be held rain or shine and admission is free, so come out to Lambs, located at the junction of 1-94 and Rt. 176, two miles east of Libertyville. More than 100 artists and craftsmen from a five state area, including Deborah Poliakon of McHenry, will be participating in this event. Among the wide vairety of outstanding work on display will be colorful country folk art, floral arrangements, soft watercolors, jewelry, custom placques, adorable puppets, handsome wood accessories and toys, stained glass, patchwork and quilting, portrait sketching, and much more. Proceeds from products sold in the businesses support The Lambs, a private non-profit community where mentally retarded adults can live and work in an environment of care and concern. For more in formation about The Lambs' events and programs, call (312) 362-4636. HOSPITAL JAMBOREE The Saint Joseph Hospital Auxiliary's Jamboree is set for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 5 on the hospital grounds, 77 N. Airlite St., Elgin. The Jamboree, an annual event held to com memorate the hospital's move to its current location in 1973, will include an arts and crafts sale, games, live entertainment, and food. For more information, contact the community relations department at Saint Joseph Hospital at (312) 931-5510. The courses are of 10 weeks duration each, meeting once a week for two hours. Credit earned is applicable to general elective credit in degree programs. The Human Potential course would prove especially valuable to students wishing to gain confidence and direction. In structor Shirley Webster will lead students in examining their values, attitudes, strengths and beliefs. Emphasis will be on applying those characteristics to conflict resolution and lifestyle planning. Applied Psychology for Men is designed primarily to promote and increase communication skills and self-awareness among male students through the discussion and consideration of topics such as problem solving, goal setting, stress, personal relationships and career-family decision making. In addition, the course instructor, Jim May, will present planning in formation related to college support services, degree op portunities and course offerings. The Wellness course's purpose is to help individuals realize their potential, physically and psychologically. Students will explore options which could increase their physical health, emotional serenity and zest for living. Instructor Cathy Bolger will lead participants in examining the concept of a Wellness lifestyle, spending time on physical fitness and nutrition, stress management, environmental awareness and the building of self-esteem. The course titled Learning Blocks is intended to help in dividuals improve their ability to learn through examination of their motivation, attitude toward learning, self-awareness and emotional blocks to lear ning. The course instructor is counselor Jim May, who will also introduce class members to short and long-term goal-setting strategies. Counselor Shelly Kaplan will be instructing the class in Career Development. Students will be provided with the op portunity to identify their in terests, skills, values and at titudes as they relate to career choices. Specific job-seeking skills, such as resume preparation and interview techniques, will be stressed. Registrations began July 16 at MCC. Fall schedules are in the mail. Specific information on the scheduling of days and times for the personal development courses is contained within, as is general registration in formation. The McHenry County Fair will have its Flower Show Friday, Aug. 3, at 1 p.m. according to Selma Davidson, flower show superintendent. Over $500 is offered in premiums for the Junior and Senior shows. A trophy is given in each division for the person or persons who win the most blue ribbons. The trophies are donated by the following garden clubs of McHenry County and the Fair association: The Woodstock Garden Club, The Kishwaukee Valley Garden Club, the Bull Valley Garden Club and the Hill 'n' Dale Garden Club of Cary. The flower show is open to any amateur flower grower and arranger. Garden flowers are to be used through out the show with the exception of a few classes. Arrangement using roadside material seems to be the most popular. There is a section for cacti and succulents, and another for hanging foliage house plants. Go to the fair of fice at the McHenry County Fairgrounds and get a fair book for rules. ARE YOU SO BUSY DOING YOUR JOB THAT YOU'RE FORGETTING ABOUT YOUR CAREER?
