In order to be counted in the craning presidential elec tion, you must be a registered voter. Bring proof ofyour age and address to register at the McHenry Nunda Library on Route 120 and Lily Lake Rd. librarian Margaret Karas is now an official registrar, having authority to register anyone living in McHenry County for at Margaret Karas 385-4934 least 30 days. This is another service offered by your friendly McHenry Nunda Library. GET WELL WISHES Lakemoor's president, Richard Hyatt had surgery June 27 at the Northern Illinois Medical Center, and was still in the hospital July 31. May he soon be returning to his home, his responsibilities, his mother, his leadership of Lakemoor and fa)s regular work. The McHenry Hospital has not only changed its location, but also the name and phone number. Such is the price of progress. CONTEST WINNER Jennifer, severi-month-old daughter of Wayne and Jayme Stevens of Lily moor, received a third place award in the "Cutest Baby "contest held during Fiesta Days in McHenry. She received a gift certificate from Hornsby, plus all the adulation of friends and family. All babies are precious, and Jennifer received additional recognition of that fact. CAMPING FIRST Packing a tent and equipment, clothes and whatever for a family of four is a challenge, especially when it is a first-time experience. Peggy and Bob Glus of Lakemoor, with their children Chris and Bob, set out July 19 for their initiation into the realms of campers. The first night was spent in a campground near Springfield and it rained-and rained. The flaps of the tent had not been tied down, so there was the baptism of four campers! To recuperate, their second night out was spent in the luxury of a motel, complete with pool, sauna and dinner. Now that is the way to go camping. Third day found the Ghises at a park near Merrimac Caverns on the river. They went swimming as the water was very inviting, with the swim mers seeming to float with the tide. And Bob Senior kept right on floating down the river as he had a difficult time getting his footing to get back to shore. The campground was in a quiet wooded area. After an exuberating day in the fresh air, all were sleeping in the tent. Except Peggy, who kept hearing strange noises, awakening her husband three times. When an extra loud crash was heard (the table left outside with pots and dishware was knocked over), Peggy screwed up her courage and yelled "Who's there?" The response was a throaty "whuff' as a scrounging dog departed into the darkness. A terrifying night of strange sounds for Peggy. TYie family arrived safely at their home in Lakemoor on the 23rd. The highlight (?) of the trip home was losing the muffler off the car. But they all gained by this first camping time, and are ready to do it again, with a bit more experience behind them. STOP SMOKING Have you ever lit up a cigarette and then found a strange sub stance in it that wasn't burning? This happened to Connie Meyer, Wayne and Laura's daughter, who noticed something unusual in her cigarette and discovered the non-burning material to be a piece of copper wire. Is there a message there Connie? Everyone wants you to stop smoking, even the cigarette company! Connie's dad, Wayne, and Jim Johnson decided they could outlast each other in breaking the cigarette chain. Wayne is still trying, but Jim capitulated and returned to smoking. Laura has not had a cigarette for a year or so, so perhaps that will give Wayne and "copper" Connie initiative to do the same. Good luck! CHANGING TIMES Birthdays do add another year to changing your personal calendar, but the alternative is worse. Wishes for happy bir thdays go to Charles Hueckstaedt, Jr. aka Dutch, on Aug. 4. His nephew Chris Mumma reaches the ripe age of 16 the following day. Mrs. Harry Brady, long time resident of Lakemoor, also has her birthday Aug. 5. Two Lilymoor people celebrate their days Aug. 6, volunteer fireman Bob Dawdy and Normie Croswell. Goldie Withrow of Lakemoor recognizes her day on the 7th. Judy and Terry Bird aka Grumpy, will be married 19 years on Aug. 7. They are busy these days at their excellent eatery in McHenry, but perhaps Terry can tear himself away and give Judy a happy outing on their special day. Aug. 9-Lakemoor Village meeting, 8 p.m. TRIP FOR TWO Vacation time is truly such when a couple can leave their self-sufficient children home, and take a vacation with just each other. Barb and Phil Mieszala did just that, leaving home the first week in July and arriving in San Francisco the first day that the famous San Francisco "cable cars" were again in operation. Barb says the natives walk one way and use the trains for the opposite direction. People were everywhere, adding to the festivity of the time. Dinner was enjoyed at Fisherman's Wharf. After seeing the sights of San Fran cisco, Phil and Barb left for Oregon to visit Barb's aunt and uncle. Now there is a place to retire! After Phil has completed his time as a fireman at Great Lakes, perhaps Oregon will be a goal for them. This was the Mieszala's first trip without children Pat and Becky, and really gave them a chance to share and have fun together. A great thing to do for all of us. GOD BLESS Ringwood: Love your dog but don't forget to also "love thy neighbor" frOGS LOOSE AGAIN t'To those who have dogs that run loose. It has been pointed out that there are a couple of dogs running at large again. Please keep them tied so that they don't antagonize those that are tied and cause problems with them breaking loose, also. The McHenry County Health Department has a whole section on Animal Control, so if you have any questions call them, or us. as they sent us a copy of the pertinent rules covering a lot; such as animal on a leash, females in heat, entry upon the private property of another, damage to property, barking idogs, (which is another com plaint in the local area) and others. If you are a dog (or any other domestic animal)lover, keep them penned or on a leash. Think about the other person. ;Katy Christopher 385-8037 Doris Low 653-9262 RETURNEES" Vic and Lorraine Patch were seen in Church Sunday, so we know they arrived home safely, after three weeks of wandering up in the Northern States - enjoying the beautiful scenery and visiting with some of the relatives in that area. Glad to see you two back. ALASKA TOUR Alaska is a beautiful and in teresting state with breathtaking scenery, but food is very expensive. This was the conclusion drawn by Ha Hogan and Mary Fergen upon their return from a recent trip there. Meals are served ala carte and prime rib was $22, a baked potato cost $2.50 and a one-scoop ice cream cone cost $1.45. Qa and Mary flew to An chorage where they learned that half of the total population of Alaska is located in this city. From there they took a train to Mt. McKinley where they spent the day driving through the park and eqjoyed the scenery and saw lots of animals including wolves, caribou, bears and moose. Then it was on to. Fairbanks by train where the scenery was gorgeous. They flew to Whitehorse and then took a bus to Skagway. At Skagway they boarded their cruise ship for a trip down to Vancouver. On the way, the ship entered the John Hopkins glacier passway which had just recently opened up to permit travel to the glacier fields. There were chunks of ice in the waterway where they could watch seals sunning themselves on the ice. The coloring shaded from glaring white to deep blue and when a chunk broke off to become an iceberg, it boomed like loud thunder. Some of the glaciers were twenty stories high and there was a waterfall flowing down one although the depth and density of the water made it more of a river. TTiey also saw salmon swimming upstream to spawn. When they docked at Sitka, they could watch whales playing in the water. A part of the trip that really amazed them was the fact that no artificial lights were needed even at 11 o'clock at night and it was always full light when they got up in the morning. The hotel rooms had heavy drapes at the windows to shut out the light so people could sleep although it was dark of night. Unfortunately, Ila got a bad cold on the trip as well as did many of the other travelers, and we hope she will soon recuperate from it now that she is back to warmer climes. REUNION It was reunion time again at the Art Christophers last Sun day. The present as well as former employees of Northern Pump Company gathered to enjoy good food, reminisce and exclaim over how quickly the "little ones" had grown up into young adults. With three generations attending, there were 102 in attendance. We were .happy to have so many of the second generation turn out with Dennis Steinmetz family coming from E. Moline, Doug Byron came from Madison on his motorcycle, and Gary and Diane (Christopher) Linstad with children came from Black Creek, Wis. Everyone else was from McHenry County and southern Wis. area. An unexpected highlight of the afternoon was when Bob Gile, returning home from the Fiesta parade stopped by with his wagon and team of mules and gave a hayride to those who wanted to get on. It was a great day for everyone. LOW REUNION Hie Low family reunion was held at the home of Doris and Walt Low last Sunday. This group gathers together every two years. 'Twas a small group this year because of so many other commitments. Those in attendance were from Boston, Janesville and Elkhorn, Wisconsin, Woodstock, McHenry, Wonder Lake and Ringwood. There was lots of food, thoroughly eiyoyed by all and of course, pictures of past gatherings were enjoyed. CONGRATULATIONS "Happy Birthday" to Ray Low and David Zell on Aug. 9; with Candy Fossum, Pat Mough and Russ McPherson celebrating their special day Aug. 10.
