'Sandoval to its center as staff npychiatrist. Dr. Sandoval, who recently * completed a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Institute for Juvenile research and the University of Illinois, Chicago, is a graduate of the Far Eastern University of the Philippines. He completed residencies in psychiatry through the University of Health I I Local residents participate i I 'm archeological discovery i f I Dr. Robert Salzer, professor '>ftf anthropology at Beloit College, announced recently that finds in an archaeological excavation near Muscoda strongly suggest that can nibalism was practiced at the site, known as the Gottschall Rock Shelter. Much of the excavation work has been carried out by mem bers of ttfe Sauk Trail Chapter of the Illinois Association for the Advancement of Archaeology, composed mostly of McHenry residents. "Numerous skull fragments, human teeth and hand bones tend to suggest ritual rather t^an caloric cannibalism," said Salzer at the last meeting of the ohapter. Human remains he /^jftid, has been found mixed with £ animal refuse " just like at ^^ftalan." Aztalan, a noted $ M(ississippian periocT ar il "eheological site in Jefferson ;JCounty, Wis., is well-known for •J the large amount of caloric ** cannibalism practiced there by Its inhabitants about 1,000 to f* X200 A.D. J? • Curiously, no body bones such '•jjps ribs, vertebra or leg bones f? *iave yet been found at the site. Salzer pointed out that, ~ taken together with the pain- |r tings found on the rear walls of »] the rock shelter, a good case can #• v' K N be made for connecting the activities at Gottschall with those of the Mississippians at Aztalan and even at Cahokia, the major center for Mississippian activity located near present day East St. Louis, Illinois. "The shared sym bolism found at the three sites is an important clue to the con nection between them," he said. Sauk Trail Chapter President Nancy Marcotte of Wonder Lake, present at the excavation during some of the work, said, "Dr. Salzer has certainly provided the members of our chapter with a superb chance to both learn and practice ar chaeological techniques." She also noted that Dr. Salzer "was extremely helpful and patient with those of us who have had no prior field experience." President Marcotte pointed out that area residents intrested in joining the Sauk Trail Chapter should contact the secretary at 8612 Memory Trail, Wonder Lake, 60097 or call (815 ) 653-9459.
