PAGE 16 - PLAINDEALER- WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8,1984 y 1 License plate renewal must now be done through mail Jg i Automobile owners with license plates expiring in August who have not mailed their ap plications should buy their new plates and-or stickers at a Secretary of State facility or financial institution, Sec. of State Jim Edgar announced. It is now too late to send ap plications by mail and guarantee delivery of the new plates and-or stickers before the August 31 expiration deadline. However, stickers and plates may be purchased at Secretary of State facilities iif Springfield and Chicago, and at more than 1,400 financial institutions, in cluding 660 banks, 171 savings and loan associations, 16 credit unions and about 600 Chicago area currency exchanges. , "If you have a current license plate with numbers only, you; will be issued new plates this; year," Edgar explained. •; "During the next three years, all* 5.5 million cars in Illin6is will: receive license plates with the! new design." Motorists wishing to keep their same plate number can ; apply for their new plates through a Secretary of State facility or financial institution.. Pre-printed renewal ap plications have been mailed to approximately 523,500 owners who renew their stickers, in August, and 37,800 owners who will also receive the new passenger car license plates this month. NOW THRU AUG. 18 Safety tips given for tanning Most People consider a dark suntan to be attractive, but according to the National Safety Council, a "deep dark tan" may do the body more harm than good. Statistics indicate that each year more than 6,000 people die because of skin cancer, prin cipally because of lengthened exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays, the council said. , Tod Turriff, manager of the council's public safety depart ment, advises sun worshippers with the following safety tips: ; -Use sun screens, sun blockers or cool, loose fitting clothing to provide skin protection and prevent burning. Sun screens prevent the burning rays from penetrating the skin but permit the tanning rays to pass. Sun blockers reduce the penetration of all ultraviolet rays. -Take care to protect the more exposed parts of the body- the noaev^a>gprti»uMe*B, etc. -It takes time to acquire a deep tan. Don't expect to do it in a day or two. Start out slow and gradually increase the time you spend sunbathing. -Limit exposure during the hours of greatest risk, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. GREEN STREET Expressing displeasure with the "restoration" of city park ways on Green Street following utility work, the council will seek a solution from the con tractor. Mayor Stanek said he felt the contractor had at tempted to meet the contract. Failing that, the city is expected to do the work. -Reapply sunscreens and sun blockers often. Their ef fectiveness can be reduced through absorption, sweating, swimming, etc. -Protect eyes from reflected and direct sun exposure. Select sunglasses with sturdy frames and impact-resistant lenses. Polarized lenses eliminate reflected glare. Neutral gray, smoke or green tint is best. -If you get a painful burn, apply cold compresses, a soothing skin lotion, and soak in a luke warm bath. For Your Information 1 Dear friends.
