Brian Olbrich, 16, of Harvard and Carole Schirmer, 17, of Marengo were named 4-H King and Queen for 1984 to climax a busy 4-H Night program at the McHenry County Fair last week. « Olbrich and Schirmer were chosen by popular vote of the county's 1,200 4-H club members from a court selected earlier by the 4-H adult advisory council. Jamie Martin of Harvard was the first runner-up king can didate, and Dawn Payne of Woodstock was first runner-up queen candidate. The new royalty will reign over 4-H activities during the year, make appearances to speak on behalf of 4-H and participate in several activities during the remainder of the fair, which continues through Sunday evening, Aug. 5. During the evening's program, county 4-H members were honored for their achievements in judging during the first two days of the fair. Schirmer, a nine-year 4-H member and a member of the '.Clover Leaf Boosters 4-H Club, has gardening and goats as her main projects. She showed the reserve grand champion milking goat, a Nubian, in both 4-.H and open class competition last week. She is a secretary ot" the 4-H Federation, the coun- tywide group that includes representatives of all 4-H clubs !in the county. J She enjoys being before the .public, and she has served as ;hiistress of ceremonies for Share the Fun the past two years. • "4-H has helped me become ;; more responsible. I have made many new friends, friendships that will last beyond 4-H. I have had the chance to become friends with parents of other 4-H members and of other leaders. This is something I will always appreciate," she said. A senior at Marengo High School this fall, Carole hopes to major in business management at college. Musically talented, she had the lead in her high school's presentation of "Gypsy." Last week at the fair, Schirmer took part in the senior talent contest by singing her favorite song from "Gypsy", "Everything's Coming up Roses." She expressed special ap preciation for the support and help of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Irving Schirmer. Olbrich, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Olbrich, is a nine-year member of the Harvard Milk Center 4-H Club. Brian focuses on dairy, crops, tractor safety and public speaking. He is an officer in the 4-H Federation and is the Federation's delegate to the McHenry County Fair board of directors. Brian says 4-H has given him a better understanding of how to communicate and work with others and how to select and train dairy animals. "4-H has also helped me decide on a career. I want to become a dairy farmer," he said. Other members of the 4-H court were Alicia Ragni, Woodstock Wranglers; Annette Freels, Lincoln Cloverleafs; Kathy Farley, Hebron Helping Hands; LynnOdden, Agrinauts; Dennis Ainger, Hebron Helping Hands; and David Behrens, Busy Beavers.
