PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8,1964 Crime of the Week Ireland draws admiration from residents This week Crime Stoppers is seeking information on an in cident of vandalism that oc curred in Marengo on July 2 sometime after 3 p.m. On that day, the 100 block of West Prairie Shv Marengo, the city was conttructing new sidewalks. After the concrete had been pured and the work men left, someone damaged a half block segment of the freshly 459-4800 poured concrete. Officials estimate the damage at $350. Vandalism is a senseless crime that we all pay for. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards of up to $1,000 for in formation leading to the arrest and filing of criminal charges against offenders. If you have any information on this damage to property that occurred in Marengo on July 2, or in formation on any other crimes, call Crime Stoppers at (815) 459- 4800. All callers remain anonymous-one never needs to give a name. Crime Stoppers, which is sponsored by the Mchenry Area Chamber of Commerce, assigns secret numbers to anonymous callers who provide in formation. Callers are in structed to call back at regular intervals to find out if any suspects have been arrested as a result of confidential in formation given. If there are arrests, the Crime Stoppers board of directors then meets to determine an ap propriate reward. A secret meeting is arranged to make the cash reward payments. Anonymous callers to Crime Stoppers do not have to appear in court. Sometimes we get confused. Dieticians tell us we need sugar for energy. Dentists tell us that sugar is a no-no. Doctors tell,Us to throw the salt shaker away. Cows and other animals will travel miles to find and lick a block of salt. Herb and Marilyn Reihan- sperger sent a card from Ireland. Part of the message says "Have talked to lots of your relatives and they're all glad you are in the U.S.A." Marilyn didn't write that. Bet? Herb has fallen in love with the Emerald Isle. Bob Blake (no Irishman is he) took his wife to Ireland a couple of years ago to visit her relatives and fell in love with the country and the people. Polish Legion of Veterans receives federal charter The Polish Legion of American Veterans has received a federal charter, which now grants it the same status and benefits as the American Legion, VFW and Am Vets The Polish Legion of Hospice offers home-based care for ill Hospice for McHenry County has begun to provide patient care for families in the county. American Veterans, better known as "P.L.A.V." was organized in April of 1921. The P.L.A.V. presently operates in 14 states and the goals and principals vary very little from those of other organizations. A ladies auxilary to the P.L.A.V. also operates within the by-laws of the national department. The P.L.A.V. is a veterans organization made up of American veterans of Polish or part Polish background. Liberty Post 188 is the representative post in the McHenry area. It operates from the post headquarters at 1304 Park St. Since receiving a federal charter, Post 188 can now in crease its service to the veterans, community and nation. The P.L.A.V. National Department at this time has announced planned formation of new posts in California, Texas, Minnesota, Nebraska and Virginia. So I Hear by Earl Walsh dollars on one of those big contests. Sharon Klontz brought me a copy of "Hie Denver Dream" program of their '83 All-Star game. Old Timers played the game. They are pictured with notes on their accomplishments. I eat up such stories. Enthusiasm runs high in those parts as it is a Denver Dream to have a big league team locate in their city. They won't give up easily. Somewhere along the line I learned some dos and don'ts of salesmanship. For instance--a good salesman doesn't say, "I just happened to be out your way and decided to stop to see you," No. You let the prospect know you made a special trip to see him or her. Another lesson: When customers enter your establishment, do you look up and speak pr do you let them stand there and cool their heels? The book says "look up if yQM want them to come back". July 26,1984 Dear SIH: Headlines in this morning's Sport Page: "Sox Hitters On Ice"- "Cool Cubs Chill Phils" Refreshing reading on a sultry morning? Respectfully, K.Brown Those Cubs chill me, too. Dallas Green hired a top manager, then got the owners to open their billfolds to allow the purchase of top players. Dallas has also pulled off some steals in his trading. We still want to see an All- Chicago World Series. I'm not holding my breath, but can dream. Since that now famous old gal called out "Where's the beef?," everybody and his brother are copying the question to fit their advertising. Why don't they get an original idea? FISCAL SHAPE Illinois' fiscal promises have been kept and the state is in good financial shape coming out of : the recession, according to Gov. * James R. Thompson. The ; governor and bureau of the budget director Robert Man- % deville met last week in New ' York with officials from . Moody's Investors Services and Standard and Poor's Cor poration. M6ody's currently lists Illinois bonds with a Triple A rating, the highest possible. Standard and Poor's ranks the state's bonds as a Double A plus rating. When Bob retires, he plans to settle where the shamrocks grow, raise potatoes and pigs and develop a brogue. Ran into a phone problem the other night that still bothers me. We have had some problem with one phone and couldn't^ hear the fellow. So I asked him to hold on until I got to another phone. When I reached the other phone, there was no answer to my hellos and wondered if the caller thought I hung up on him. Whey would I hang up. After all, I have been waiting for a call telling me I won a million IT'S PICNIC IIMEI H FILL UP YOUR • • • BASKET HERE!
