Check policies on coupons with trial-sizes SECTION 2 - PAGE 3 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, AUGU8T15, IM4 By Jane Fuller Dear June: I am a little confused about using coupons on trial-sise packages. I recently tried to use a 50-cent coupon (good on any size package) on a trial-sise package that was priced at 49 cents and the cashier said she could not accept a coupon that had a value greater than the price of the item. 1 wasn't asking for the product and 1-cent change, all I "wanted was the product free. What do you think about this? - Debra Ford, Sierra Vista, Ariz. Dear Debra: Most super markets follow a policy of either honoring a coupon up to the value of the product, or refusing to take a coupon that has a higher value than the product In the first case, when you get the product free, but not the full value of the coupon, you may be satisfied with the free product. But many shoppers may wonder whether the supermarket gets the full value of the coupon and whether a policy that results in a "windfall" to the store is a fair one. In fact, the store does get the full value of the coupon (plus an 8-cent handling charge) and the difference between the amount for which the coupon was redeemed and its value, even if only a few cents, is a windfall to the store. Is this fair? Personally, I feel that it is, and we should be satisfied with the free product. for: A $2 refund. BLUE CORAL Rebate Offer, P.O. SENSATIONAL ARCHERY W I L M O T S H O W R O O M O N H W Y W • O N E M I L E S O U T H O F W I L M O T But some people are never satisfied and would rather kill the golden goose than allow a store a few unexpected cents profit on the transaction. Because of these folks, there are stores that are sensitive about this windfall situation and are afraid otrMig criticiied ft faking these few cents-the difference between the amount for which the coupon was redeemed and the face value. These stores, and it looks like yours is one of them, just throw up their hands and say: "If the value of the coupon exceeds the price of the product, we won't redeem it." Can you do anything about this? I would try talking to the store manager or the executives at the head office. By refusing to accept these coupons, they deprive their valued customers of a money-saving opportunity. SMART SHOPPER AWARD My Smart Shopper' Award goes to Linda Carpenter of Beevill, Texas: "Asa refunder I used loads of Scotch transparent tape and I am always looking for it on sale. When I recently found it advertised on special, I told all my friends about it and they stocked up, too. It was on sale at three rolls for 99 cents. I used one coupon, which gave me 25 cents off two rolls, and when I got home I sent in the three proofs of purchase for a $1 refund. So nice!" I agree with Linda. Smart shopping is so nice!
