Non-food, cash donations help FISH also SECTION 2 - PAGE 5 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15,1984 FISH is very fortunate to have supporters who rally to our aid. Last winter a local hardware store donated a large collection of varied articles. Those ap propriate for needy families were used immediately. The many other items, all new and of good quality (for example, many traverse rods) presented an opportunity to raise money for our pantry. Martha Peters suggested selling these things at the Fiesta Day Sidewalk Sale. She found a place to store them all those months and found a committee to help. They moved all those items around, set up the sales fables and manned the sale. The hardware store hearing of her endeavors donated many more articles. These efforts raised $600 for FISH. TwensH^ needed medicines. One family has two members with diabetes, another family has a transplant member - these people need medicine daily and it is very expensive. The pantry, of course, receives most calls for help. We can only supply emergency food. Last month we gave supplies, enough for three of four days, to 31 families. We have families on food stamps in great need of paper products, soap, tooth paste, etc., not covered by food stamps and with no money to purchase. The cold weather - the warm generous glow of holiday sharing - remind people of the needs of the less fortunate in the winter. But their need for food in particular is just as great in the summer. Even though the economy has improved we have a great many families in dire need in our own community. However, if FISH does not receive added contributions we will be forced to curtail our pantry. FISH volunteers would hate to see this happen. They see the families who need help - they know that help has been given by FISH and that sometimes it is just the necessary amount to tide them over thill something more permanent can be arranged. When you consider your own grocery bills you can see FISH needs contibutions to continue. It would be of great help if other churches or organizations could find it possible to have a mon thly collections of food stuffs. Are you a member of such a group - could you instigate a movement to .help? Can you as an individual help? The FISH phone number is 385-0258, and the address is FISH, P.O. Box 282, McHenry, EL. 60050. Orientation program set for adults returning to college The Adult Re-Entry Program (REP) at McHenry County College is sponsoring an orientation for students returning to school after a break in their education. It will be held Wednesday, August 22 in the MCC cafeteria. Coffee and cookies will be served from 6 to" 6:30 p.m., with the program begiiming at 6:30 p.m. Orientation offers a chance for adult returning students to learn about MCC and special programs the college has for returning students, to tour the MCC campus and meet fellow returning students. Anyone who has registered for classes for the first time, or is thinking of a return to school, should stop in August 22 for information. Those planning to attend, should call the REP office at MCC, 455-3700, so that a packet of information is prepared for them The car donated by a local doctor was sold by a local car dealer, producing a large contribution. The exercise group using heavy cans of food for hand weights donated the food to FISH every week. All innovative ideas helped stock our pantry and all were gratefully received by FISH. Four of our local churches have each designated one Sunday a month as a collection day for FISH. We are very grateful to the individuals who send checks to FISH. We have contributors who send monthly checks and we know that in some cases this is a real sacrifice. Because of the generosity of our community we were able to help many people this last year. But now our funds are almost depleted. The money was given to FISH to help our neighbors, and that is what we have done. FISH helped with a j few energy bills so the service would not.be cut off last winter - FISH has helped pay for urgently Safety hints: Learn laws for funeral procession By Secretary of State Jim Edgar Special traffic laws ad dressing funeral processions can help Illinois motorists avoid accidents. Illinois law gives funeral processions the right to travel through intersections without stopping as long as due caution is exercised after the lead vehicle has complied with any traffic control devices. If the funeral procession is crossing the front of you, stop and wait until all vehicles have cleared the intersection before proceeding. If the procession is coming toward you, do not turn in front of it or cross its path. , Vehicles in a funeral procession must have their headlights on, and usually can be further identified by a funeral pennant, flag or windshield sticker displayed on each vehicle. If you are following a funeral procession, you may pass the vehicles if you don't cause a traffic hazard or interfere with the procession. Vehicles not in a funeral procession are not allowed to join the procession unless directed by a traffic officer and cannot form a procession or convoy to obtain the special right-of-way privileges granted to funeral processions.
