PAGE 4-PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15.11M . ^ * v • 4 Harvest is here, summer's ending You wouldn't know it from the temperature, but summer days are fading away. It is harvest time. Somebody questions my story that threshers used to come for breakfast. It wasn't all the threshers, just the threshing machine crew. They got three meals. Others had to eat breakfast at home, then stayed for dinner and supper. So I Hear by Earl Walsh As I remember, a man named Mathews owned the threshing machine He covered farms from down Nun da way up through Irish Prairie. With 24 farms to service, the crew started at one end of the line one year, then reversed the route the next year. Grain was sometimes stacked, but mostly set up in shocks. The old machines had carriers to take away the straw for stacking. Then came blowers that could be turned from side to side. I can still hear that old steamer engine clugging up the road. No speed limits were broken. The older men were content to rest after dinner, but there was plenty of horse play with the younger sprouts. I had never received any wages on the farm until one year when I was big enough to pitch bundles I was happy to hire out for two dollars a day. After a few days, my employer decided the pay was too high because that was all the older men were paid. My argument was I hadn't seen anybody taking my turn when the empty wagons came to the field. I got what I bargained for Almost! I was pleased to receive a phone call from my long time friend. Clarence Smith. Some of you will remember that Clarence was one heckuva good athlete in his day. Our caller brought up the fact McHenry was part of the County League 12-inch Softball program 50 years ago. Fast pitching. -- ^ "Hie thought is that Nancy Fike may be interested in in formation on this team for the big sports day at the McHenry County Historical site Sept. 16. Clarence says Nick Miller was the manager of the local team and may be able to furnish some information. Nick was a good athlete and good fellow in everybody's book. Bet he will help. They can't leave the flashy Ol' Southpaw out of the list. Alvina had a treasured letter from Helen Wegener, former McHenryite, telling of Rosalind Nye Hitzeman's death. I am pleased to hear that Helen is still a reader of this chatter. The last time I saw Rosalind was at the class of '28 fifty-fifth anniversary dinner. Think she was a particular friend of Verona Etten. (I attended that dinner with such Old Timers as Earl Dowell.) McHenry should erect a monument to Helen Wegener's mother. She was a stalwart, intellignt nurse who was in attendance at tnore births in this area than anybody I could name. When Mrs. Wegener arrived on the scene, doctors relaxed. A great lady. Those were days when the stork delivered babies to homes instead of hospitals. What hospitals? The gift of a new cigar lighter came my way. Trouble is there is wording imprinted on the lighter "Use only for lighting cigarettes". That's discrimination! Rita Martin is in seventh heaven since her Cubs have been winning. Always a loyal Cub fan. she stayed with them through thick and thin - mostly thin. The Lake County Defenders will co-sponsor the recycling drive with the McHenry County Defenders, Saturday, Aug. 18, in the parking lot of McHenry Community High School West Campus, 4734 W. Crystal Lake Rd. The drive will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Lake County Defenders, an environmental organization which shares with the McHenry County Defenders the goals of protecting and preserving the environment; has been in existence for about two years. Annette Al-Araj is president of the group; Lorens Tronet serves as executive director. According to Bob Caniglia, recycling committee chairman, the group will apply its share of the proceeds to its operating budget. Items which can be recycled include: newspaper with no junk mail or magazines included, "tin" cans rinsed and flattened, glass containers with all plastic and metal removed, used motor oil, aluminum scrap of all kinds, and brown paper bags and cardboard tied in manageable bundles. There will also be a buy-back program for 100 percent alunimum cans. The price for aluminum has been fluctuating recently. The amount the Defenders will pay for cans will be based on the current price. Crushed cans will continue to bring two cents more per pound than uncrushed, and a penny per pound bonus will be paid for lots of more that 100 pounds.
