Sports T PAGE 17 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, AUGUST 24,1164 League Golf McHenry Country Club ladies Several birdies and an eagle helped blast Carol Cooney into the undisputed position of women's Club Champion as the tournament concluded its fourth and final round Tuesday, Aug. 21 at McHenry Country Club. With rounds of 85-89-83-79-336, Carol held the lead all the way to claim the crown for the 11th time. Closest on the heels of the champ was Judy Smithson with a gross 367 for a net of 287, laying claim to Low Net Champ in Class A. Excitement stirred in <thg other classes as well. In Class a Jan Conway grossed 411 for the four weeks to give her low gross championship in that class, while Suzanne Raymond low- - netted with 285 in the same class. In Class C, Kathy Vehring low- grossed with a total of 430, while Ethel Koehler low-netted with 288. In Class D, Dee Chelini took the title, with a gross 498. Under the daily statistics, in Class A, Lynn Schmidt low- netted with 68 while Betty Ptaelan and Liz Nolan sharedthe honor of low putts with 30 each. In Class B, Jan Conway low- grossed with 104 while Speedy Neuman low-netted with 74 and Linda Puccio low-putted with 32 roll-ins. In Class C, a tie for low gross was shared by Toots Gerstad and Jackie Victor, each shooting 114 while Alta Gierke low-netted with 72 and Ursula Cisliek low- putted with 32. In Class D, Mitzi Kenton low- grossed with 122, while Rita Sayler low-netted with 76. Rita also low-putted, 32. Lots of birdies and chip-ins were recorded on this par­ ticularly beautiful day. Big bird on the top of of the birdie tree was an eagle on number six by Carol Cooney. Others were Barb Weber on 16, Liz Nolan^on nine, Alvina Yopp on 14 and Cooney on 12, 15 and 16. Chip-ins were executed by Sharon Pepping on four, Linda Puccio on 10, Speedy Neuman on three, Toots Gerstad on five, Liz. Nolan on six, Dot Shadel on seven and Esther Jemiola on 18 (last week). While the 18-holers were establishing their winners, the Nifty Niners were playing a Tennessee Dog Fight, which was won by the team of Judy Babb, Bea Pond, Pat Reed and Harriet Rouse with a score of 44. All four teams participating tied for low putts with 14 each. Following ' their golfing event the Nifties were entertained at Judy Babb's home for a gala afternoon. Happy Golfing! Liz. - Chapel Hill ladies The new results, after the match play of August 14, show that McHenry Favorite Sports has lost the lead they have held since July 13. The new leader is Little Chef with 75% points. McHenry Favorite Sports has 73%, Mar Ray 70, Fox Hole Tap 69, Classic Trophy 66%, Steffan's Jewelers 65%, Acu Pac 63 and McHenry Floral 60. The contest was for individual low putts. In Class A it was Lu LaBay with 12. Maureen Doherty was the winner in Class B with 14. There were three with low putts of 15 in Class C: Francis Manson, Betty Smith and Ruth Vines. August 21 was a beautiful day for golf, weather-wise. Shirley Klapperich and Sandy Donovan had low putts of 13. Dorothy Kreamcheck had two nice chip- ins on 10 and 13. Sandy Donovan chipped in on two for a bird that won her match for her. We look forward to only one more Tuesday of match play. .We were all glad to see Mae Collis, a former Tuesday lady, looking so chipper when she paid us a surprise visit last Tuesday. Sports log Minoso chairs 10K race GURNEE - Former Chicago White Sox great Minnie Minoso will be celebrity chairman of the Great America 10K to be held Sept. 9 at 8 a.m. at Six Flags Great America. Minoso will be on hand, signing autographs and presenting prizes to winners of the race, which is organized by Gurnee Running Club and sponsored by Frontier Horizon, Inc., WMET, Coca-Cola and Jays Potato Chips. The race will be loop through the beautiful theme park and adjoining streets of Gurnee. Trophies and prizes will awarded including a trip for two to Denver or San Francisco. Raffled prizes are being donated by local businesses, including Foot Locker, The Competitive Foot, Hie Athlete's Foot, Morrie Mages Sports and Sport mart. Six Flags Great America will be offering half off admission ticket to the theme park to every finisher of the race. Lung Run Sept. 23 The American Lung Association of DuPage and McHenry counties will sponsor its Sixth Annual Lung Run on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 10 a.m. This year's sponsors of the Lung Run are Heritage Bank of Woodridge, WKKD-96FM in Aurora-Naperville, and Suburban Buick in Wheaton. Applications are now available for the 10-kilometer and five- kilometer runs that will be held in Wheaton starting at Wheaton- Warrenville Middle School, at the corner of Wiesbrook and Butterfield Roads (Route 56).. Official long-sleeved t-shirts will be given out this y6ar to the first 600 entrants. The entry fee for the Lung Run is $7 before Sept. 17 and $8 up to race time. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on Lung Run day. Each runner that participates will be eligible to win one of the many donated prizes to be drawn after the run. The Lung Run is open to all, and has become one of the largest runs in the area. This year, even more runners are expected to enjoy the scenic run along the Illinois Prairie Path.
