Bills signed into law regarding medical costs, amusement rides Consumers will be able to shop around for the best price on medical care, and amusement rides will be inspected for safety under two new laws signed recently by Gov. Thompson, according to State Rep. Dick Klemm, R-Crystal Lake. Hospital Cost Containment (SB 495). The Illinois Health Finance Reform Act requires hospitals to make public their fees for standard procedures. This will allow consumers to "shop around" for the best price The new law also sets up an 11-member health Care Cost Containment Council to collect data on the cost of hospital care and hospital finances. The council will then recommend additional methods for keeping health care costs down. Another provision of the law sets a goal of limiting hospital .•price increases to the general >rate of inflation. Regulatory •steps could be discussed if this goal is not met. Amusement Ride Inspections (SB 1425). Requires that car nival and amusement rides be- inspected annually for safety, and requires that operators of these rides get a permit to run them. This legislation was approved after amusement rides caused a series of deaths FINDING RECORDS The Consumer Education Research Center has published a book entitled "Guide to Locating Vital Statistics." In other action, the House Labor and Commerce Com mittee Subcommittee on Video Display Terminals has scheduled the following meetings: 9 a.m. Aug. 28 in the City Council chambers, 425 E. State, Rockford. 9 a.m. Sept. 25 in Room 114 of the Capitol Building, Springfield. Whatever else can be said for or against the summer of 1984, there is no denying that it has been filled with some pretty good entertainment. As we enjoy, it becomes evident that even in the world of amusement there is ample dissension. Possibly that's what makes it so interesting. One thing is certain, even the best offering gives rise to a feeling that with man's obstinate and suspicious nature, wars will always be with us. usin' &, anderin BY KAF The Olympics event in Los Angeles was a good example. Most of us wanted to do what we thought was expected of a loyal Olympian audience. It was to watch with admitted favoritism,, together with a fierce nation f̂l\pride and a tremendous admiration for some of the world's greatest athletes. Wouldn't you think this would be considered a commendable action? Well, it wasn't enough. Even before the games got underway, the Olympics, like most other newsworthy events, v became embroiled in politics. The Games are no longer just a showcase for athletic events. Despite their Olympic garb, many of the world's premier athletes became political punching bags before the torch was lighted. And wouldn't you think winning a gold medal would be heralded by everyone? Of course not! We have to question whether the coveted medal means less because the Soviets and their kind chose to stay home. They may have been a few thousand miles away but it didn't stop them from con demning a spectacle that caused most of us to "ooh" and "ah". A hint of the golden years of Hollywood in the finale? Maybe, but this is what makes the horror of the daily front page hews bearable. In a summer of reruns, the commercialism of Olympics coverage was acceptable. How else could a network pay for such an exhibition? But the criticism was there in good supply. With the last of the closing fireworks display • only a memory, we are now engaged in the Republican convention. As we write it is just beginning, but of the Big Three in summer entertainment it promises to be the most routine. If it is not dull the GOP had better woiry. With the Democratic con vention and the Olympics behind us, and with a less than exciting Republican assembly in progress, it would be easy to turn off the TV and wait for fall. Don't do it! Those Cubs and Sox are first rate watching much of the time. What's more, everyone loves a winner and both of them are making a bid for the big prize. That kind of love is worth mentioning in a society that persists in convincing everyone else there is, indeed, something wrong not only in the State of Denmark but just about everywhere JUST RIGHT FOR THE KITCHEN COUNTER! •RCAH CokwTrak RCA 13'diagonal ColorTrak TV with Digital Scan Remote Control OPEN MON.
