Comments in "Bacon's Strip" by Zeke Bacon: "Talk about a sick bunch of baseball men. Last Friday night when the scheduled circus failed to show up and the ball park was packed almost to capacity, Nick Miller and Joe Regner were about the most downhearted pair in these parts, but it wasn't anything these men could help and they came through in real fashion with their rebates on the tickets so the crowd certainly should not feel down on them." Barely escaping a frost, people in this vicinity were shivering with the cold the last of the we£k with the perspiration from the record heat hardly dry on their brows. Records fell as the mercury dropped as much as 60 degrees in some regions and snow flurries raged so furiously in Montana that a plane was grounded at Big Timber. Mayor Stanek credits Alderman Jack Pepping for much of the preparatory work which resulted in grant approval. Many others also assisted the city in its proof of need and other requirements. City officials were especially pleased with the cooperation of Mr. Kenneth Petersen in arranging for the sale of the property. Mayor Stanek referred to him as a "good neighbor" whose chief interest in the transaction was to assure tliat his property would be used for the public benefit of future generations. A large crowd in attendance at the public information meeting held Tuesday night at the McHenry VFW hall told state officials they wanted action, not more studies, concerning problems on the Fox River and the Chain of Lakes waterways.
