Hog industry needs production changes The complex demands of farrowing house management requireng the manager to function as nutritionist, en v i r o n m e n t a l e n g i n e e r , veterinarian and part-time mechanic, may help explain why some hog producers are not doing as well as they would like. According to Gilbert Hollis, Univeristy of Illinois Extension swine specialist, 20 percent of all pigs born alive still die before they reach weaning age. That shows how far the industry has to go to improve its productivity and efficiency. The (EXTENSION) People AMml Good nutrition for sows and pigs is probably the most im portant factor in farrowing house management. Starvation causes more deaths among neonatal pigs than all other factors combined. Since the sow is primarily responsible for her pig's nutrition, her diet is crucial. Like aii>od dairy cow, a sow needs lots of feed to produce enough milk for her litter. In fact, within a few days of farrowing, a sow needs an unlimited supply of high-quality feed. She will control her intake to fit her needs and those of her pigs. A sow on limited feed will likely be limited in milk production, body maintenance, and subsequent reproductive performance. Contrary to popular belief, pigs will not scour because their mother produces a lot of milk. IN MEMORIAM In loving memory of our beloved brother, David M. Garrelts, who passed away April 1, 1984. The pearly gates were opened, A gentle voice said, "Come." And with farewells unspoken, "" He gently ente.ed home. Sadly missed by his sisters, Suzanne and Deborrah. Milk is the one food young pigs digest efficiently and the complex delivery system of the sow provides only a small amount of milk hourly, for just a few seconds. It is impossible for a healthy pig's digestive tract to be overwhelmed with milk. A well-fed sow normally provides enough nutrition for her litter during their first three weeks of life. By the time pigs are 10 days old, however, they may begin to rely on creep feed. Creep feed may be especially improtant to the relatively immature pig subjected to the shock of weaning at three weeks of age. This is because the complex carbohydrates and proteins in a grain based diet stimulate the pig's exzyme systems and prepare the animal to digest dry feed when it's weaned.
