K 7 N V I ' M M MARIAN HURRICANES Hartlieb, Fortin could lead repeat performance By Sam Natrop Plaindealer News Service WOODSTOCK - Comparisons are easy to make from the outside, but are extrememly difficult to make from within. Take Don Penza, for example, and his Marian Central Hurricanes. It would be easy to say this year's squad couldn't hold a stick to last year's Class 2A state champions. Gone from that squad are an all-state caliber quarterback, an all-conference middle linebacker and several key two-way players. But returning in 1964 is a staunch group of stalwarts that just might lead Marian back on the Road to Normal. "THE KIDS DON'T WANT TO BE compareto ltst year. They are different kids with different temperaments and different personalities," Penza said. "But, yes, we have a solid group of about seven or eight players who will makes us a very good ball club. Just how good we won't know until the first ballgame." Marian Central has been tabbed the team to beat in the Northwest Suburban Conference by most, and has been picked to win it all again by others. The Hurricanes have been ranked as high as fifth in a pre-season Class 2A poll. "I feel great about it (the ranking)," Penza said. "Last year we weren't ranked (No. 1) until the last week. How will it affect the kids psychologically^! don't know. If we're going to be number one, we have to go out and prove it. "But it's more of a burden thisf year because we're expected to win right off the bat," he added. "Last year it wasn't until the fourth game that we were ex pected to win." MARIAN'S 13-0 SEASON LAST YEAR was Penza's first undefeated as a coach, but a tough non-conference opener against Crystal Lake South may be the biggest road block in the way of another perfect season. "We respect Crystal Lake South very much," he said. "There's no doubt they're one of th^( top teams, if not the top team, on our schedule." And, Penza added, a victory over the highly-touted Gators "would set the stage for the rest of the season. In being suc cessful against South, we can do well the rest of the year." Last year, the 'Canes had their way with South, 2(H). Despite the loss of Chuck Hartlieb to graduation, the rest of Marian's backfield remains pretty much intact. Andy Hartlieb and Dan Fortin who rushed for 1,325 and 1,391 yards, respectively, give Marian one of the best running back duos in the suburban area. Hartlieb, who scored 14 touch downs rushing, was also MC's top receiver last year with 24 receptions for 344 yards and three touchdowns. MARIAN WILL RETURN TWO OF ITS three starting receivers from last season. Split end Chris Brown caught 19 passes for 260 yards and five touchdowns last year. A1 VanLanduyt is the incumbent at tight end and Tom Will, who played a variety of positions, offers Marian good speed and reliable hands at the flanker spot. "We have the backs and we have the receivers. All we have to do is get them the ball," Penza said. The unenviable quar- terbacking task belongs to senior George Powers, who is a transformed running back. Powers, who missed most of last season with a broken collarbone, will try to 'fill some pretty big shoes at position. the signal-caller 1 urn to next page - . ye ir v » %3 •"' r 1 '.w; i?, . -• -;X I MARIAN PREPARES TO DEFEND 2A TITLE We Wish You "Good Luck and Victory in the '84 Season" R & D A U T O S E R V I C E OVER 20 YEARS EXPERIENCE ONE MILE SOUTH OF McHENRY WEST OF ROUTE 31 4250 BULL VALLEY ROAD-McHENRY 24 HOUR TOWING 385-7448 Best Wishes For The '84 Season!
