Popovich, 23, of 2915 unrelated charges of dnvini By Jim Nash Plaindealer News Service In retrospect, Ike Bitton, chairman of the McHenry County Waste Study Advisory Committee, seemed to be jumping the gun when, at this week's committee meeting, he predicted the birth of a solution to the county's waste disposal problems. "Finally, after nine months, the baby's about to come out," Bitton said at the beginning of the meeting. He made the remark following a prepared statement he read to the com- mlttee; ~~~~~ Bitton might have spoken too soon, however, as the balance of the advisory committee meeting * was spent grilling two waste disposal experts offering their recommendations. The consultants' recom mendations were to be among the final stages of the com- Meeting set on canvassing The McHenry County D e m o c r a t i c W o m e n ' s : Organization is sponsoring a Canvassing Workshop, Satur day, Sept. 15 at the McHenry Library. One stark reality of the study is the eventual need for a sanitary landfill in the county. About 78 percent of the county's refuse would still have to be buried in a landfill, according to the report. Consultants Jerry Chudzick and Jerry DeMers fielded a barrage of questions from the committee and the audience. Many of the inquiries focused on a proposed waste disposal plan costing $2.7 million. The figure was repeatedly It included the estimated price of constructing a garbage in cinerator, five area trash drop off centers and four leaf and grass composting facilities. Conspicuously absent from cost estimates, it was pointed out, was the cost of buying acreage and building a landfill. Previous reports to the com mittee listed the need for a 135- aere dumpsite costing about $2.6 million. Under the recommended plan, McHenry County would in cinerate 15,500 tons of refuse yearly. That would account for about 10 percent of the county's garbage disposal problem. In a preliminary . draft, the consultants recommended county officials build a steam generating incinerator capable of burning 50 tons of burnable garbage a day. Chudzick said such a facility could cost county residents more than $2.5 million, The steam, however, could bemused to generate power for area in dustries. He said two businesses in the county have shown in terest in buying the steam on a contractual basis. Five voluntary trash drop-off centers would pick up 4 percent, or 6,500 tons, of waste materials annually. Construction of the centers would cost about $75,000 2.5 million gallons of setfage disposed at municipal wastewater treatment plants. Twenty-five percent of the county's waste is filtered at the plants currently. Jeffrey S. Popovich, Kama, McHenry, was taken to Northern Illinois Medical Center by Spring Grove Rescue Squad -following a one-car accident about 5:30 a.m. Saturday, on Wilmot Road at its intersection with Sunset in Burton Township. Popovich told sheriff's police his vehicle was southbound on Wilmot Road when he fell asleep at the wheel. Police report the car left the road and traveled ap proximately 153 feet through a diteh. Sheriff's police cited two McHenry women Sunday on driving while intoxicated. According to police, a nor thbound vehicle was observed crossing the center line on River Road near Illinois 176 about 2:30 a.m. After stopping the vehicle, Grace Soberg, 4T, 2622 Riverside D ive, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage. Bond is set at $3,050 for an Oct. 16 court hearing. Laura Zicco, 36, of 1216 Jasper Drive, was cited for DUI after police reportedly observed her northbound vehicle fail to dim headlights on Wilmot Road. Four leaf and grass com posting facilities that would be set up around the county would collect 1,300 tons a year, or roughly 1 percent of the problem. Eight percent of county garbage can be absorbed by existing recycling programs the proposal suggested. Voluntary composting of organic trash by residents could account for about 3 percent of the garbage. Not included in the report was NEED HEALTH INSURANCE?
