I Prepare for talent show to benefit mission Everyone is invited to come to the Bicentennial Festival Fair Saturday, Sept. 15, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., on the grounds of the First United Methodist Church, 3717 W. Main St., McHenry. The event will feature games, food, entertainment and fun for the whole family. Admission is free but a slight donation will be takeiyfor games. Games for the kids will in clude small hay wagon rides, fish pond, a clown face painting booth, spinning hoop, sidewalk art, sack race, apple bobbing, and fire extinguisher. Activities for adults are the Twinkee Trot, weight guessing, darts, golf, ring toss, hand writing analysis, and palm reading. Pretzel the Clown will per form from 12 to 1 p.m. and break dancers will be featured from 1:30 to 2 p.m. A highlight of the day will be the talent show at 3 p.m., en titled, "Those Were the Days." This production, presented by talented members of the Church Missions Committee, will feature the rebirth of old-time favorites such as Baby Snooks, Shirley Temple, Burns and Allen, and a host of others. For the admission price of 50 cents and an item for the FISH program, the show will also entertain everyone with a barbershop quartet,, songs by the Joyful Noises and an audience sing-along. Proceeds from the fair will be donated to the Red Bird Mission in Kentucky. Evangelical Free Church starts AW ANA 3; bi (H fWi -n.< JB if The McHenry Evangelical Free Church announces the opening of its AWANA club, Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. It will once again be meeting at Valley View Elementary School, 6515 W. Rt. 120 in McHenry. All children, grades kin dergarten through fifth grade, are welcome. Boys and girls, kindergarten-second grade, are in "Sparks"; girls, third-fifth, "Chflmp"; boys, third-fifth, "Pals". Each separate group is cared for by dedicated leaders who take the time to plan fun and learning experiences for the clubbers. A typical club night will consist of a flag ceremony, opening prayer, singing, games, stories or puppet acts, memorizing God's word, and receiving awards for clubbers' achievements. A special club night might consist of slide movies of nature and animals, the story of creation, an auction, a missionary sharing, or perhaps pie in the face. Regardless of what the night's program is, everyone has a lot of fun getting to know each other and growing as Christians. "The greatest 19th Century dramatic oratorio" is how Thomas Wikman describes Mendelssohn's "Elijah," which will be performed by the New Oratorio Singers at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at St. John the Baptist Church in Johnsburg. This marks the eighth major concert presented by the group at St. John's, chosen for its acoustic excellence and spiritual setting. Music director Wikman will conduct the 95-member chorus, professional soloists and 43- piece orchestra, composed of members of the Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera orchestras. Wikman, the director of Chicago's Music of the Baroque, voice teacher and concert organist, has performed at the White House, Orchestra Hall and the Woodstock Opera House. Timothy Noble, baritone, as Elijah, is relatively new in the opera world. He made his debut in 1981 with the San Francisco Opera; toured with the Paris and Frankfurt operas and performed at the Vienna Festival in 1983. The Glyn- debourne Festival is on his schedule in 1986. He has sung the oratorio repertoire of Bach, Brahms, Faure and Haydn with such orchestras as the Indianapolis, St. Louis and Atlanta sym phonies, and Ravinia Festival. Soprano Lorna Haywood is equally at home on the concert and opera stages. Since her debut in Covent Garden in "The Magic Flute," she returns there frequently and regularly sings w.th English National, Scottish, English National North and Welsh National operas. In America she has sung with the Washington Opera Society and the opera companies of San Diego, New Orleans, Seattle arid Fort Worth.
