PAGE 23 - PLAIN DEALER • FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14.1*84 Sports Skyhawks look toward future By Chris Juzwik Plaindealer sports editor JOHNSBURG -- Johnsburg High School girls' tennis coach Roni Cepulis has a problem, on her hands. Cepulis* Skyhawk team has just one returning player from a team which finished sixth in the Northwest Suburban Conference in 1983. /; "We're really depleted," Cepulis said. "We have a very green team." And Cepulis readily admits she isn't deluding herself and her team with thoughts of greatness for 1984. "I'm looking more to next year," she said. "This season, we're just going to try to hang in there." "We're just going to have fun and gain experience. We're going to work ourselves into shape for next year." CEPULIS SAID SHE gave herself three years to have the team where she wanted it competitively. "That was my goal. The team needed con tinuity. I'm really looking forward to next year," she said. This season, Cepulis will have Deb Lynn as her number one singles player. ' "It will be tough for her to play number one," Cepulis predicted. "But I've really got no one .else to play it. "This will give her experience for next year. She'll be super because she really has a lot of potential." Senior Patty Schmitt, the only returnee, will handle number two singles, and junior Kim Pollock will fin the number three slot. Cepulis said she's unsure of the doubles positions. "We're trying a couple different com binations." I /*S8<% Fall Preview ^ \ sc*' CEPULIS HAS GOOD REASON to be optimistic about the future, however. "We have 13 freshmen out for the team. It's the largest turnout in the school, except for football. A year or two down the road, these girls are gbing to be good." For now, Cepulis will try to instill the basics into her young team. "We'll work hard on ground- strokes and volleys. I want them just to keep the ball in play. They're still getting their McHenry team wins title McHenry's Hiller and Hamm Softball team was recently crowned USSS^Wisconsin Class B State Champions in the state tournament held recently in Milwaukee. This qualified the team to participate in the Class B Central Division Championship, held in Rockford. Hiller & Hamm again fared well in the championship series, which had 80 teams, representing seven states, entered. Playing some of their best baseball of the season, Hiller and Hamm finished the tournament with a record of 8-2. This was good enough for fourth place among the 80 teams. Individual honors went to Bill Meyers, who was named to the all- tournament team. * Hiller and Hamm is a traveling tournament team made up of players from the McHenry 12" League. The team has been in existence since 1971, making annual appearances in national tournaments. The team will be traveling to Cedar Rapids, Iowa this weekend to compete in the USSSA National 16" Tournament. Team members include John Meyers, Rich Meyers Wakitsch, Steve Mai, Wayne Tom Fowler, Mark Hiller, Bob Michels and manager Harry May. Team sponsors are Dick Hiller and Robert Hamm. Pistakee honors champs Pistakee Country Club was the site as 25 golfers teed it up for the title of club champion last weekend. Dick Roberts claimed the low net honors, with a 36- hole total of 136, shooting 65- 71. Low gross champ was Jim Junkunc, who fired a 72-75- 147 for the tournament. The event was held last Saturday and Sunday, and was a 36-hole medal play tournament. N " I I I I M I I I if R I , ifinm in" I I Gel rebate coupon While Supplies Last While Supplies Last L E D. The Skyhawks dropped 5-0 decisions to Woodstock and Crystal Lake Central, two schools picked to vie for the Fox Valley title. Johnsburg hosts Grant in its first conference match of the season today at 4:30. Cepulis picks Grant to be a force in the Northwest Subur ban. « But the Skyhawks will have to wait for such lofty goals. "If you could win on attitude, we'd come in first," Cepulis said. v Jr. High harriers begin practice The McHenry Junior High cross-country team, under the direction of coach Don Seaton, began workouts last week. At week's end, there were many surprises, not only for the newcomers, but for the so-called veterans as well, according to Sexton v The first week was devoted to the longer distances, the run ners learning some of the practice routes.
