Netters rip Grant .• r., iv .-.I. PAGE 24 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14,1984 On the Sideline Dick Rabbitt Warriors face tough early test Coach Joe Schlender and his "Fighting Warriors won their season opener over a weak Morton East team, by a score of 20-0 last Friday evening at McCracken Field. After the Warriors scored the initial touchdown midway through the opening period, one could see the game would be no contest. The Warriors iced the game in the second period with two more scores, going into the intermission leading 20-0. For the size of its school, Morton East has a very poor football program. It's no wonder they will combine with sister school Morton West next year for their athletic programs. I would venture to say that the Mustangs could still be on McCracken Field and not score 20 points. BUT TAKE NOTHING AWAY FROM the Warriors. They played solid defense, but in the second half became complacent. Penalties, mistakes and the lack of the killer instinct led to scoreless third and fourth quarters. Opportunities were present, but the Warriors just didn't take advantage of them. Call it the first game jitters or whatever, but the Warriors will have to play better football for four quarters instead of only two, if they are to continue their winning ways. Tonight they will really be tested when they take on an old rival, Grant of Fox Lake. The Bulldogs were robbed last Saturday at Ridgewood, falling 22-20, and should come out with fire in their eyes. The program is on the upswing, having been down the past several years. They have a good quarterback, a fine running back and a couple of huge linemen. All reports are they're the team to threaten Marian Central in the Northwest Suburban this season. It should be a good ballgame when these two old nemeses clash, and we hope to see a lot of you Warrior fans at the game. PAM SCHAEFER'S McHENRY HIGH volleyball team opened Fox Valley play this week with games against Cary-Grove and Woodstock. The Warrior spikers, having lost to Antioch and Wauconda, are aiming for a couple of victories, and will host Johnsburg this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. The "Running Warriors" of Bill Hutchinson finished sixth at St. Charles last Saturday. Derrick Petermann of Oak Park-River F orest set a course record with a time of 15:12. Warrior runner Chris Creutz was second. Other Warrior finishers were Terry Harth 14th, Pat Donahue 29th and J.R. Wright 31st. STILL jOON'T UNDERSTAND THE football ratings of the past week. Marian Central, the defending Class 2A champ, defeats a good 4A school, Crystal Lake South, and doesn't move up in the ratings. Woodstock, defending 4A champs, defeat a larger Waukegan West school, and doesn't move up in the standings. There has to be some politics involved somewhere along the lipe, as both of these teams were impressive in their respective vic tories last weekend. Don't forget - Sunday afternoon in Union, the McHenry County Historical Society is having its McHenry County Sports History Day. Time is 2 p.m., and we expect to see a large group of McHenry people at the event. The Historical Society is in downtown Union, and you can't miss it, for all the cars and people that will be in the area. . It should be a grand time and S.I.H. is going to give a few words of wisdom about McHenry County's athletic history. OUR SPORTS EDITOR IS LEADING after the first week in the battle of the crystal ball. Picking his alma mater Marian over Crystal Lake South put him in the lead. He's 6-2,1 stand at 5-3. We have a friendly wager over the season picks, and there's still eight weeks to go. , If the Warriors can put four solid quarters together, and keep up the good defense, they should defeat Grant. Riverside- Brookfield has its best team in years, and should beat Woodstock. Jacobs over hapless Wauconda, Lake Zurich to bounce back and defeat Cary-Grove, and the Tigers of CL Central over West Chicago. Upset special: Dundee-Crown to defeat St. Charles, Lake Park over CL South, Marian over Harvard and Johnsburg to handle Nazareth Academy of LaGrange Park. Plaindealer staff at Sports Day UNION - McHenry Plaindealer staff members Earl Walsh and Dick Rabbitt are two of the committee members for the "McHenry County "Sports History Day," to be held Sunday at 2 p.m. The program, which will focus on the past contributions made by athletes and athletics in the county's rich sports history, will take place at the McHenry County Historical Society in Union. Don Peasley and Toney Roskie, both of Woodstock, join Walsh and Rabbitt on the committee. Their work began last winter, their purpose to gather a varied collection of early local sports memorabilia, and also establish some of the major high points of local athletic history for the museum. Since then, donated items and loans of memorabilia have been brought to the museum for Sunday's show. Also planned for the day is a formal program, beginning at 2 p.m. in the museum's main exhibit room. SPEAKERS FOR THIS INCLUDE WALSH, who began covering sports for the Plaindealer in 1935, and whose memory goes back Grant player succumbed, 6-1, 1- 6, 6-2. Representing Algonquin will be Julius "Tubby" Simonini, who will speak about the impact McHenry County has had on the baseball minor and major leagues. Following Simonini, Peasley plans to recapture the atmosphere back in 1952, when tiny Hebron High School beat the odds, producing a basketball team which captured the Illinois state title. For this accomplishment, judged by the committee to be the single greatest contribution to county athletic history over the past 100 years, the Historical Society will award recognition certificates to those starting team members. BETWEEN 1:30 AND 4:30 P.M., museum visitors will have the opportunity to view special exhibits loaned for the occasion. McHenry items on display will be an early 1940's Johnsburg Tigers baseball uniform from Don Freund; a McHenry Shamrocks baseball scrapbook on loan from Bill Bolger; basketball team standings and scorebooks, including much information on Crystal Lake games and players going back to 1908 from Rabbitt; and basketball, football and baseball team pictures from McHenry High School dating from 1932, loaned by Leonard McCracken and Joe Schlender.
