The school is locqteg on Route 47 across from McHenry County Courthouse. Mike and Jill Stephenson, who have gardened organically for many years, will be the moderators lor the gardening program. It is co-sponsored by the McHenry County Defenders and the McHenry County Organic Farmers Association. Tips to help gardeners have more successful crops will be discussed. Varieties of vegetables that can be planted in the fall will be identified. Various organic mulches availabble in the fall and dif­ ferent ways to preserve foods, such as drying and salting, will be explained. Time also will be set aside for the members of the audience to share their experiences in gardening. It will give the participants an opportunity to exchange ideas and to learn from others. MCC now registering for fall scenic tours Strains of both familiar and surprising folk songs as well as classical jazz will echo through the Opera House in Woodstock on Sunday, Sept. 16. Area performers are donating their time and talent for "The Gathering," a benefit for Hospice for McHenry County. Performing will be Eunice and Don Mast, Darlene Fiske, Peggy Upschutz, and Cham- pignol Well-known folksingers, the Masts have an "everybody welcome sing-a-long" in their home the first Sunday of every month. Mad, an eighth grade teacher in Evanston, and Eunice, who teaches guitar and banjo, will join Ms. Fiske in a variety of songs including "Housewives' Lament" and "Bury Me in My Overalls." One of the founders of the Woodstock Fine Art Chorale and the New Ontario Singers, Ms. Fiske has been collecting and singing folk songs for years. As the singers perform, Ms. Lipschutz will "illustrate" their songs. Ms. Lipschutz, who travels from coast to coast with her illustrating, painting and cartoons, loves to work with singers of both traditional and contemporary folk songs'. She has illustrated a number Of books including an "Ella Jenkins Childrens' Song Book." Champignol will complete the program performing works of composer Claude Boiling. "The Gathering" will be held at 2 p.m. A reception will follow. Tax deductible tickets are $12 and available at the Opera House (815) 338-5300. McHenry Codnty College is sponsoring a variety of early fall "scenic tours". For those who enjoy canoeing, there are three trips scheduled. Sunday mornings, Sept. 16 and Oct. 7 the Fox River will be ihe setting. Led by Staff of Northern Prairie Outfitters, the groups will meet at Hickory Nut Grove in Cary and canoe into a nature area where geese, ducks, herons and other wildlife abound and flora is abundant. A Wisconsin canoe trip is also offered. Those interested"should meet at MCC to drive to Wilmot, Wis- on Sunday morning, Sept 90 and canoe up river. live area is scenic and no power boats are allowed. Canoes can be rented from Northern Prairie Outfitters for the trips. Persons who enjoy architecture can sign up for the Frank Lloyd Wright Tour of Oak Park-River Forest. The "prairie sdiool" of architecture will be highlighted, and the trip will include a visit to the Frank Lloyd Wright Museum and stops at locations where several of his famed designs are featured. There will also be stops at art, gift and book stores; bakeries and an ice cream shoppe. The all-day trip is set for Saturday, Nov. 10. The colors of autumn will be the focal point of a Wisconsin Fall Color Tour scheduled for ?W?i: Saturday, Oct. 20. Those at­ tending will travel through the Kettle Moraine area and will attend the "Autumn on the Farm" program and tour Old World Wisconsin at Eagle. The trip will include visits to roadside markets, apple or­ chards, antique and gift shops and a bakery. Travel will be by bus, which will leave the college at 9 a.m. and return 7:30 p.m. ' Gil Fornaciari, tour leader for MCC, is scheduled to head both the Frank Lloyd Wright and Wisconsin Fall Color Tours. The armchair traveler can journey to Singapore three c o n s e c u t i v e W e d n e s d a y evenings via Judith Hemker's dialogue on "Singapore: A Successful Third World Coun­ try". Whether the participant plans to do business or vacation there, or just wants to become more knowledgeable about the country, it will be an opportunity to learn how the nation developed from a colonial outpost to a regional leader with international influences. Hemker will guide the traveler through the cultural, political and economic "aspects of the country at McHenry West High School on Sept. 26, Oct. 3 and 10.
