The 35-piece Air Force Band of the Midwest has been appearing before audiences throughout the Midwest since it was activated on Oct. 1,1941. Stationed at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois, the band original ly was known as the 5th Army Air Corps Band until it became one of the Air Force's regional field bands when the Air Force became a separate branch of the armed forces in 1947. In past years, military bands have been known for performing Sousa marches or the Glenn Miller style of Army Air Corps dance band music. The Band of the Midwest still plays these kinds of music, but it has diversified to provide a much wider variety of music in order to match the right music with the musical tastes of audiences. * The primary mission of the Air Force bands is to support Air Force recruiting efforts and com munity relations. Most often the band is divided into three specialized musical groups^ • The|\8jpiece Jazz Band per forms a wideVariety of jazz, rang ing from Glenn Miller to the sounds of today's popular jazz groups. • Midwest Express keeps pace with modern music by featuring rock, Southern rock and country and western music. -- • Horizon is a highly versatile group within the band whose repertoire includes the latest "Top 40" rock tunes and well as disco and the jazz/fusion sound. All 35 members of the band also perform together as a marching band to provide music for military activities at Chanute AFB and other military installa tions. For special occasions the band is used as a ceremonial band to perform patriotic music for of ficial military and community events. if Your Connection to the Future" , n *c.
