SECTION 2 - PAGE 6 - PLA1NDEALER - WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER It,1184 Registration period starts for auxiliary police course Schedule wheat planting after fly-free The McHenry County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (MCESDA) is accepting applications for the next auxiliary police course that will start at 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, and continue for five weeks. The 25-hour course will be held in the MCESDA operations room at the courthouse in Woodstock. The course will cover traffic and crowd control, protection of property, communications, radiation hazards, criminal law, county geography, and tornado spotting. The curriculum was developed under the guidance of the McHenry County Sheriff's Department, and will be taught by sheriff's auxiliary deputies, and MCESDA staff. The graduates of the course will be able to assist in various activities as a backup to cpunty and police organizations gaining better proficiency for them and a tax saving to local residents. Auxiliary police volunteer their time, and buy their own uniforms and equipment. As part of their continuing education program, they assist the sheriff and local police in traffic control at public gatherings and functions such as the county fair, festivals, celebrations, and high school activities. They only assist at government or non-profit func tions. Exercises have assisted in training the division, and as a result when emergencies have arisen, such as the 1982 air jrash, floodings and tornadoes, they were on the scene in minutes and remained for days. A century ago, the act of rounding up a crew of men and horses to track down an outlaw was van effective law en forcement tool. But today, crime, criminals, and police have become sophisticated and no law enforcement officer sets foot on the streets without massive doses of training in law, criminal procedures, en forcement techniques and court decisions affecting law en forcement. Auxiliary police by no means will graduate with this type of proficiency, but they will be eligible to attend another training class of 150 hours and become a, member of the sheriff's auxiliary deputy force as a deputized citizen volunteer. Advance registration for the class is mandatory. Persons must register by calling the MCESDA Office at (815)338-6400 by Thursday, Sept. 20. Male and female applicants must be 18 years of age or over. , There are 14 other volunteer divisions that are part of MCESDA, other than police. Inquiries are invited for those desiring information regarding them. They include: ad ministrative, air-support, commissary, citizens radio service, radio amateurs, tele communications, emergency assistance, maintenance and supply, posse, public in formation, radiological, scuba, sheltering and weather ob servers. It is difficult for us to imagine that summer is already drawing to a close, but with children back at school and the passing of Labor Day, this is in fact the case. Fall is fast approaching and with it area producers begin The ^mmmm (EXTENSION) People AMml turning their thoughts to the coming harvest and the planting of next year's wheat crop. When making planting decisions, it is important to two weeks qfter the Hessian fly consider the Hessian fly-free free date nad a lower per- TH date. Wheat planted on or after this date is much less likely to be damaged by the Hessian fly than wheat planted earlier. The date varies throughout Illinois, ranging from September 19 here in the extreme north to October 11 in the far southern part of the state. Delaying wheat planting until after the fly-free date will also reduce the severity of several wheat diseases including Barley Yellow Dwarf, Wheat Streak Mosaic, and Soilborne Wheat Mosaic viruses, Take-All, Cephalosporium Stripe and Septoria Leaf Blotch. Yield losses can be serious when these diseases are not controlled. Recent Illinois studies have shown that wheat planted within B KRYSTAL KLEAR CLEANING 'WHERE NO JOB IS TOO BIG OR TOO SMALL REDUCED HOUSEKEEPING RATES FOR „ SENIOR CITIZENS Ovar 15Y«ora of Satis if i«d Customers OFFERING: QUALITY HOUSE mum •Floors Stripped •Windows Washed •Office Cleaning •Carpet Cleaning •Nones Sanitized •Gift Certificates Available for Baby Showers, Birthdays and Anniversaries FULLY INSURED t BONDED S15-385-1S77 centage of viral infestation and higher yields than wheat planted before that date. Although spring infestations of Barley Yellow Dwarf and Wheat Streak Mosaic are generally not extremely damaging, fall infestations of these diseases can cause near total crop losses. Planting wheat after the fly-free date reduces the risk of these diseases as the activity of aphids and mites, common virus carriers, is reduced as the weather cools. *• Soilborne diseases such as Take-All, Cephalosporium Stripe, and Soilborne Wheat Mosaic can also be reduced by planting after the fly-free date. Cooler soil and air temperatures at that time do not favor in festation by these diseases much as normally date. te temperature prior to this as Later planting will also help to control the Septoria diseases by reducing the amount of lush green growth on wheat. This growth favors the fall buildup of diseases. Heavy faU in festations provide the seed for spring epidemics which often reduce yields by 15 to 20 percent. Of course, there are some diseases which may be promoted by later planting. These diseases Include seedling blights and bunt which often appear more serious in late- ited wheat. Seed-treatment ith a fungicide will generally overcome this disadvantage, however. ' . .
