Empire Theater is under new ownership FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 30, 1W4) E.W. Johnson, McHenry's popular manager of the Empire Theater, has sold out to R.J. Miller of Quincy, who took over the' theater this week. Mr. Miller's father operates two theaters in Quincy so Mr. Miller has had considerable experience in the show business. William J. Stratton, nominee for state treasurer; Francis G. Blair, renominated for the office of superintendent of public in­ struction; and Richard J. Lyons, candidate for the general assembly, are scheduled to speak in McHenry next Wed­ nesday. . Mr. Stratton and Mr. Lyons are residents of Lake County, so they are neighbors and known to a multitude in Mdlenry County. wice Told Tales Attractions at the Empire Theater this coming week in­ clude "We're Rich Again" starring Edna May Oliver and featuring Marion Nixon and Billie Burke. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 21,1944) , Last week the county board of supervisors passed the annual tax levy calling for a total of $150,410 to be levied in the county. This is an increase of $21,020 over the previous year, when $138,390 was levied. The ambulance the 4-H boys and girls in the County have raised money to purchase will be presented to the Navy next Saturday, Sept. 23 at Woodstock. Money for the purchase came from scrap paper drives, dances and various other fundraising activities. A caravan of three top state officials will be in McHenry County for a political meeting at the Woodstock Opera House next Monday, according to County Chairman Henry L. Cowlin. Lieutenant Governor , Hugh W. Cross, Auditor of Public Accounts Arthur C. Uieder and Attorney General George F. Barrett will speak. This campaign fairs to be unusual inasmuch as gas rationing makes for less travel, and therefore there will probably be few, if any, of the old-fashioned mass meetings with thousands of people congregated. More than 20,000 voters are already registered in the county, according to County Clerk Woods, and many more new names are being added every day. Men and women in the service will not and do not need to register in order to vote. Frank E. Low, 25, husband of the former Miss Helen Kilday, is receiving his initial Naval in­ doctrination at the U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes. Gordon Scholle is now stationed at Sheppard Field, Texas, Mrs. Lisle Bassett and children, Eileen and Homer, returned on Friday from a four week's visit with her mother, Mrs. March Schweitzer in Houston, Texas. Mrs. Charles Liebman of McHenry, author of an article on school finance which will appear in the October issue of "Woman's Day", is chairman of the finance drive. The membership tea will be held at the home of Mrs. Frank Howard, Jr. Mrs. George Alvary is president of the League. Both Mrs. Lester Bacon of McHenry and her daughter, Mrs. Diane Ballotti, of Sycamore received top ratings at the DeKalb County Fair held last weekend in Sandwich, HI. The agenda for the evening will include the review and consideration of two certificate of need applications: the first from Bayside Terrace in Waukegan which is proposing to construct a 49 intermediate bed addition to its existing 119 bed facility; and the second from Highland Park Hospital for the discontinuation of 46 medical- surgical beds to establish a 40 bed skilled care facility.
