That's the bad news. The good news is that it's a great time to play a new golf course. If you want to score well on a new course, here are some tips.. Play conservatively. The player who says "I'm going for it" usually has forgotten what "it" is. "It" for the daredevil, more often than not turns out to be a double bogey. Along the same lines, if you are going to lay up, don't try to figure out just how close you can get to the lake and hit that club, use a club that can't possibly get you to the lake. As often as possible, take mental notes about the holes surroun ding the one you are playing. It helps to know if there is hidden water on an upcoming hole, or how far a landmark is from the green on an adjacent hole. Study the scorecard before you go onto the course. You might as well prepare yourself in advance for the strengths of the course. You can take a lot of pressure off yourself if you know the first two holes are realistically bogey holes, and then play them as such. Playing a new course is almost always fun and going for the Spectacular shot is also fun, but usually lower scores on a strange course are the result of conservative play* Next week: Assess Your 1964 Season.
