SECTION 2 - PAGE 10 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26,1984 Schools 'S Students prepare for SAT testing More than 1.4 million students are* expected to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Ted-National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT-NMSQT) this Call in more than 19,000 high schools across the nation. Among them will be 95 students scheduled to take the test Oct. 23 at Johnsburg High School. "Students take the PSAT- NMSQT for several reasons," fcaid Denny Spraetz, guidance counselor at JHS. "The test is the qualifying exam for students wishing to participate in com petitions of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Students also want to find out how they rank among their peers taking the test in other parts of the country." The test also provides an opportunity t to become familiar with the type of questions similar to those on the Scholastic Aptitude Test and the ACT, which many college-bound students take. Before taking the PSAT- NMSQT, students receive a student bulletin containing a complete practice test with an answer key and scoring in structions. After the test, they receive a booklet that helps them interpret their scores Particularly helpful for students is the "Report of Student Answers," which in cludes the correst answers and their own responses and scores. They also receive their own test booklets so they can review the actual questions, see the ones they got wrong and try to determine why they missed the correct answer. The college board also provides other services that enable counselors and other school personnel to better un derstand and interpret the test results to students and parents. New faces at Montini Head lice can also come home with kids Shortly after the beginning of school, children start coming home with the symptoms of head^lice. In fact, infestation of head lice is almost native throughout Illinois schools. It has been known for many years that head lice are spread by contact, not by uncleanliness. Since there is a lot of body contact between school children, you may want to save this column. Then, you will be ready to combat an infestation should your child suddenly start scratching furiously at his or her head. What are the symptoms of head lice? Scratching of the scalp is the first clue. The it ching is usually persistent and sojnetimes severe. The bite wounds may be present anywhere on the scalp, but the back of the head and neck and behind the ears should be cllecked first. Head lice seldom oCcar on eyebrows or eyelashes. Scratching will increase the inflammation and may lead to secondary bacterial infection. The egg (nits) appear as whitish ovals firmly attached to the hair shafts. If you find any nits within one half inch of the scalp, this indicates an active infestation unless treatment has been given within the past 10 days. Head lice crawl; they do not jump or fly. They are tran sferred from one person to another by direct contact with an infested person's head or hair, or by contact with such personal items as hats, hair brushes, combs or bedding. An infestation will last as long as lice or live nits are present on the head. The incubation period for nits ranges from seven to 10 days. After they hatch, head lice become egg-laying adults in 10 days. The life span of an adult louse ranges up to 30 days. There are prescription and special over-the-counter shampoos that will get rid "of head lice. One is as effective as the other if applied according to the instructions.
