Komar threw touchdown passes of 42, 3 and 48 yards and ran for two more as the Rockets ran their undefeated streak to four games and remained tied for the Big Eight Conference lead with Hampshire. "He maybe didn't have a real outstanding game statistic-wise, but he had a good game nonetheless," R-B Coach Randy Hofman said. "He's a third-year quarterback, now. He's a real cool customer.'" THE ROCKETS dominated from start to finish as they scored on three of their first four drives of the game to open a 21-7 halftime lead. They had another score thwarted in the waning seconds of the first half when a pass was picked off at the goal line. "The credit goes to our of fensive line," Hofman said. "They had a good game (two weeks ago) against Harvard and they've been improving ever since. We're just happy to get out of here without any major injuries." Komar finished the night 10- of-16 for 192 yards and three scores and added 45 yards rushing. Christensen carried the ball 15 times for 98 yards to lead all rushers. Leli added 53 yards on four totes while Dennis Komar had 42 yards on nine carries. "This (game) was a nice one in that we could relax a little bit in the fourth quarter," Hofman said. "We finally got a chance to get everyone in the game. The kids did a nice job. They're a young bunch and they're hungry. We're just glad we got through unhurt." The Rockets will host Valley Lutheran Friday night. RIG EIGHT Hampshire Richmond-Burt. McHenry again exhibited the consistent, balanced offense and aggressive defense as they raised their again, 12-6 season record to 3-0. The Hornets opened the season with a 19-13 victory over te Winnetka Wildcat All-Stars on Sept. 23. One week later, the Hornets captured a thrilling overtime ^win over the Round Lake Spartans, the defending league cham pions. Warrior runners take third place at Palatine The McHenry High cross country team captured third place at the tough Palatine Invitational Saturday, after splitting a triangular meet at West Campus Thursday. At Palatine, coach Bill Hut chinson's Warriors finished with 84 points, behind champion Stream wood (43) and Schaumburg (60). McHenry was paced - as usual - by senior Chris Creutz, who finished fifth. The numbers three -four-tive runners were just three seconds apart. Warrior junior Terry Harth was 11th, followed by J.R. Wright (17), Pat Donahue (25) Mike Maksymiak (26) Jim Wautelet (31) and Chris Mumma (32). The frosh-soph Warriors were second at Palatine, with 67 points. Tom Grant, with a fifth- place finish, led the team. Jeff Zurblis was 10th, John Chesler 11th, Rick Pankiewicz 15th and Bill Creutz 26th to round out the scoring. "Schaumburg and Stream- wood are two top-ranked teams. We ran real well," Hutchinson said. LAST THURSDAY AT HOME, the Warrior harriers defeated Fox Valley Conference rival Crystal Lake South, 23-33,; but lost to a tough Libertyville team, 26-31. The loss was the Warriors' first at home since the 1980 season. Their string of 23 straight dual victories is still intact. The McHenry harriers are 43-3 since 1981 in dual meets. Creutz won the race in 15:55, and Harth was third at 16:02. Wright finished eighth with a 16:43 clocking, Donahue nth (16:55) and Maksymiak 16th (17:16) to finish off the Warrior scoring. The Warrior varsity is now 4-0 in the FVC. The McHenry girls team lost to both Libertyville and South, despite a fifth place finish by Pam Bradley. Mary Schultz was ninth, Trudy Milstein 14th, Dee Paulson 18th and Kim Yost 27th. T H E F R O S H - S O P H WARRIORS downed both teams, paced by a first place finish by Grant. Chesler was second, Zurblis fourth and Pankiewicz fifth. Creutz took 13th to account for the final tally. The frosh-soph beat Liber tyville 17-42, and South 23-33. All three Warrior teams will be in action tomorrow at West Campus against Fox Valley foe Jacobs. The meet will begin at 4:30 p.m. fourth-and-seven from the Tigers' 16-yard line. The Tigers' ensuing drive appeared to have stalled on the Warrior 38, but Mike Lobinsky leapt offsides, and five plays later, Hansen scored the game-winner. The Warriors managed to make the final minutes in teresting, thanks to strong- armed quarterback Craig Hill, who demonstrated why he was an all-FVC selection as a junior last season. The lefty signal-caller con nected with Curt Justen for a 46- yard gain to put the ball on Central's 32. The two Warriors hooked up on the next play for a 23-yard touchdown pass that cut Central's lead to 23-14 with 2:54 remaining. A two-point con version would ' have put McHenry in striking position. But Whit Friese batted down Hill's conversion pass attempt at the goal line to ensure Cen tral's seventh straight win over McHenry. "MY PHILOSOPHY IS IF we're down by 14 points or even less, we're going to go right now. If we get one, all we can do is tie, and we don't want to tie. We want to win. We threw the wrong way and they made a good defensive play," Schlender said. Central junior Jeff Aldridge threw two wrenches into McHenry's plans. First he in tercepted a Hill aerial at mid- field with 8:15 left to play to set up Dodge's field goal, and later he cleanly fielded an onsides kick-off after the Warriors' final touchdown. Aside from the interception, Hill had a marvelous afternoon, going 13-of-22 for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Warrior wingback Pat Dunne's leaping, 14-yard reception at the left Corner of the end zone on fourth- and-10 cut Central's lead to 14-6 with 2:16 left in the first half. Hill then zipped the ball through several pairs of hands for the two points. MACK NOTED THE WARRIORS' big-play potential last week, but underestimated his own team. The Tigers and quarterback Brad Merkle proved they can keep pace with the flashiest offenses. Merkle, the forgotten man during Central's rush-oriented second half, was 6-of-16 in the first for 121 yards. Included was a 43-yard bomb to Marie Statter that set up Central's second touchdown. Central rolled up 237 yards rushing and outgained McHenry in total yardage 358-287. The Warriors managed just 82 yards rushing on 25 tries. Jim Shaver, returning from a shoulder in jury, gained 32 on six tries and Dunne carried 11 times for 27. Hill employed seven receivers, his favorite being Justen, who caught four for 94 yards. Dunne grabbed two for 47 and Mike Schultz nabbed a pair for 27. The Warrior sophomores dropped a 22-0 decision. The Warrior freshmen team was defeated by Central, 21-8. Immaculate Conception of Elmhurst will travel to Mc- Cracken Field for a non- conference, homecoming game with the Warriors Friday night.
