Johnson, after hfing closed for some time, thus providing the local people with a first class place of amusement and bringing many people to Hie city. New; owner, R.J. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oct. 5, J 944 I Dean McCracken was elected to serve as president of the senior class at McHenry Community high school. Charles Martin became vice-president ;uid (ieorge Whiting, secretary. McCracken has been active in all extra "curricular activities during his four years in high school Me has been a star athlete, helping both football and basketball teams to many r,ctoi ies in the past. He is the solo rornetist in both band and orchestra, is a valuable member of the mixed chorus and had a leading part in the junior class play last year. Martin is a star "athlete and is bass soloist with the mixed chorus, of which he is president. Whiting has been a valuable addition to the in strumental music department in, the school for several years and is also A member of the chorus. Roy and Alvin Blake, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Math Blake of Court Street are serving together in the Seabees and are now doing construction work in the south Pacific. They enlisted their services in March, 1943 and left the country in October of that year. They are still together, working side by side in constructing air bases at some remote Pacific point. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oct. 1, 1959) Winds of high velocity ripped through McHenry and the county last Saturday night. Fortunately, the city was not the hardest hit local community, as it was in last year's storms. Even so, fallen television aerials and tree limbs were not an uncommon sight. sNeither the Public Service company nor Illinois Bell reported local damage as great as in the Harvard and Marengo areas. Queen candidates for the upcoming homecoming at McHenry High School Friday are Joyce Eckstein, Judy Gregory, Judy Hans, Lynn , Brubach, Ann Peschke and Rosemary Roti. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oct. 2, 1974) McHenry County college trustees learned Thursday night that completion of the new campus facilities could be delayed four or five months due to the delay in obtaining structural steel. Charles Weingart, McHenry dairy farmer and community leader, has been appointed to the Illinois Board of Agricultural Advisors. Approximately 2,500 homes were without electricity Monday night when a 34,000 volt line came down at the drive-in theatre at the corner of Lincoln and Chapel Hill roads. A spokesman for Commonwealth Edison said a connector let go causing the one hour and 30 minute power outage. A well known optometrist, Dr. John T. Gray, 59, died Sept. 28 at Harvard Hospital. Dr. Gray had practiced optometry in McHenry for 24 years. 'Comics and Funnies' is the theme for the 1974 homecoming at McHenry high school Oct. 3,4 and 5. A breakfast honoring alumni will be served Thursday.
