' she said The signs and symptoms include the following physical quahty. quality. poor and hair texture sometimes hair -Extreme weight change In the course of several months, anorexics may lose 25 percent or more of their body weight Bulimics usually, lose less , but their weight may nse and fall dramatically -Hypothermia Extreme weight loss reduces the body's ability to maintain heat Because the heart rate and general metabolic activity s lows , ano rex i a and bu l im ia ( A - Bj patients often complain of being chilled. -Insomnia Routine sleeping patterns are frequently disrupted by the disorders -Constipation." The intestinal tract is often disturbed by the failure to take in or to retain enough food and fluid Abuse of laxatives, diuretics and emetics may also contribute to the problem. -Skin rash and dry skin Starvation and body purging often result' in skin problems because of body dehydration and related problems. -Loss of hair and nail quality. The protein deficiencies associated with dramatic weight change and weight loss may be reflected in poor fingernail -Dental cavities and gum disease The nutritional deficiencies related to A-B. together with vomiting, harm the teeth and tissues of the mouth Stomach acids cane severe erosion of the surface of teeth, resulting in dental cavities -Changes in the menstrual cycle A-B can greatly reduce the female hormone levels. Amenorrhea, the absence or suppression of menstrual discharge, is often reported by girls with A-B If problems with fertility develop, they are generally reversed withm a few months to a few years after recovery from the disorder Several behavioral changes are also common to the disor ders: --Unusual eating habits. Teenagers with A-B typically choose not to eat regular meals with other family members. They may frequently make excuses for not eating with family members such as. "I'm not hungry right now," "I've already eaten," or "I'm going to eat at a friend s house." -Hyperactivity and unusually high interest in exercise. Teens with A-B often turn to rigorous exercise routines to rid their bodies of calories and fatty tissue. Although many teens are, and should be. fitness conscious, anoretics and bulimics often try to do' more than their bodies can stand. -Frequent weighing. A-B victims are obsessed with their weight They may take scale readings several times each day. -Use of laxatives, diuretics, emetics and diet pills Used By Sec. Of State Jim Edgar The fall harvest season is underway for most Illinois farmers and slow-moving farm machinery and implements are common on the highways. Farm tractors, implements of husbandry and animal-drawn vehicles must display a slow- moving vehicle emblem and at least one flashing amber signal light to alert drivers of their presence The flashing amber signal light is displayed after dark or when visibility is poor, and must be visible to the rear for at least 500 feet in normal sunlight. Slow down when approaching farm machinery that is not only slower moving but often wider and longer than other vehicles. Farm vehicles are restricted to narrower county roads and two-lane highways. Before passing, make sure your vehicle can safely clear the machinery or implement while staying on the road. A farmer often will pull to his right to allow more room to pass. Be prepared to take evasive action if the implement makes a sudden turn, and watch for machinery that may not be properly secured for towing. Driving carefully and slowing down when meeting farm vehicles will make the harvest season safe for everyone YOUR WEDDING TUX '34.95! Strong academic performance reflects an area in which they seek to gain total mental control, similar to their aspiration to attain total physical control over their bodies. Emotional and perceptual changes are also common, in cluding the following: -Distorted body image and denial. Persons with A-B hae distorted body images. Bulimics have an inordinate fear of getting fat Anorexics think they are fat despite their severe underweight condition. Consequently, they may vehemently deny their problem or their skeletal thinness. -Inability to think clearly. As with any form of starvation, later stages of A-B lead to lethargy. The dramatic biological changes within the deprived body may cause fuzzy, incoherent or irrational thinking. -Dichotomous thinking. Events may be viewed only in black and white, with no .shades of gray. The work) is seen only in extremes, with no room for compromise or moderation. A weight gain of a few otaices. for example, may be viewed as threatening a quick ballooning to gross overweight. -Over-personalization. Events or comments are taken out of context and may be overinterpreted or misread as threatening and negative. A-B victims may "take everything personally,*' interpreting others' non-critical words or -Low sense of self-worth A-B patients frequently have low self esteem. Some will voice ideas or concerns about suicide, and a few may actually be suicidal -Low sense of self-control These teenagers often feel they have tittle control over their world. A-B may be their way of taking complete control over their physical bodies. -Perfectionism A-B victims may impose on themselves the impossible task of excelling to perfection in any endeavor they undertake. Power and control over their bodies may be one means by which they seek to demonstate perfection. -Masked anger Many A-B patients will 'bottle up" their anger inside themselves, not daring to show real feeling for fear of making someone angry and. in turn, being rejected. -"Good" and "bad" food lists -It is common for anorexics and bulimics to develop inaccurate notions of "good" and "bad" foods. With time, more and more foods may be moved to the "bad" list. "Adolescence can be rough for both parents and teens, and some of these changes, to a lesser degree, take place in many normal teens' lives," Ash- brook said. "But if someone you love seems to have nn»«ami or erratic eating habits and shows several of these symptoms, it may be time to intervene."
