Island Foundation, recently received a check for $300,000 from the Telephone Pioneers of America as a down payment on the S3.500.000 pledge by the Telephone Pioneers, which is a 600.000 member service organization of the Bell System and ATAT John Zimny of McHenry is chairman of the 'Miss Liberty Fund Raising Drive' for Nor- thern Illinois-State Area, which is part of 13 regions of Pioneers m the United States and Canada. The local organization sup­ porting the effort is Kisbwaukee Life Member Club of the Telephone Pioneers. The program is coordinated by Pioneer Partners which are spouses of the Telephone Pioneers It was originated in May of 1983 as strictly a bake sale project to be held on Election Day. nationwide, for three years, but it has expanded to penny collections, button sales, replica candy statue sales, bowl-a-thons, public appearances and fund-raising of all sorts. McHenry County, and the municipalities within, generated $1,638,719 74 in the first quarter of this year Within the codnty, the largest municipality, Crystal Lake, led the way with *519.753.71 in total tax receipts, followed by the City of McHenry Aith $292,383.45. Woodstock and McHenry County generated nearly the same amount in total tax receipts. $242,342.71 and $247,707.91, respectively The figures were released recently in a report from the Illinois Department of Revenue. Two of the more important categories in the sales ta* are food sales and automotive and filling stations. Taxes from the food industry, exclusive of eating and drinking establish­ ments, resulted in $125,684.93 from Crystal Lake, $79,885.44 from McHenry, $58,650.21 from Woodstock and $14,003.52 in unincorporated McHenry County. Automotive and filling stations are typically big money generators, particularly in the high traffic areas of the county. In Crystal Lake, revenues from this source amounted, to $110,352.24. In other areas, $102,647.24 came from unin­ corporated McHenry County, $97,146.63 came from McHenry, and $64,749.39 came from Woodstock. Elating and drinking establish­ ments also contributed dto state and local coffers, generating $34,515.85 in Crystal Lake, $$22,059.07 in McHenry, $30,306.69 in unincorporated McHenry County and $18,252.84 in Woodstock. Of prime concern to many people in the county are the building trades. During January, February and March, the slack times, sales taxes generated by the lumber, building and hardware sales included $39,650.41 in Crystal Lake, $20,327.22 in rural McHenry County, $20,104.17 in McHenry and $13,464.21 in Woodstock. County historical society gets three awards from state Recently the McHenry County Historical Sqciety received three Certificates of honorable mention at the 18th annual meeting of the Congress of Illinois Historical Societies and Museums held at Macon County Historical Museum in Decatur. CIHSM is comprised of county and local historical agencies affliated with Illinois State Historical Society. The society's entries com­ prised the largest number of awards granted this year to one organization and were awarded in three different categories. The first was for the 20th an­ niversary Sunday programs held at the county museum in Union last year that featured local history Sundays for the villages and communities throughout the county. A second award was given for the society's historical plaquing program of marking local historic sites and structures. The third award came for an in- school curriculum program developed on local McHenry County history for use in the schools. Accepting the awards for the McHenry County Historical Society were President Irene Borre of Richmond and board member Clara Vogel of Greenwood. Hie county society was for­ med in 1963, is not tax supported and bases its growth and programs on volunteers. The McHenry County Defenders announce the selection of Peter Swenson of Crystal Lake as the recipient of the 1984 Alta Rush Titus Scholarship Award. Swenson is a student at the University of Illinois, Chicago Campus. He currently is completing undergraduate credits before beginning his graduate studies in biology. His areas of study and interest in­ clude environmental toxicology, biological pest control, soil biology and environmental health. The recepient's interests are in line with concerns of the residents who support the Defenders. They feel his ap­ plication reflected a genuine concern for the preservation of the environment. The $750 scholarship honors and encourages a McHenry student of junior, senior, or graduate standing who is engaged in some field of en­ vironmental study. This is the seventh scholarship granted by the McHenry County Defenders in honor of Alta Rush Titus for her lifetime of work in en­ vironmental conservation. Alta Titus of Crystal Lake has a distinguished record of service in the field of conservation, and at a young 89 years of age, serves as a member of the board of directors of the Defenders.
