\ PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER HERALD, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER S, 1964 Reader provides words to forgotten old song One of our dear readers, who watches this column for omissions and commissions, responded to my request for words to a song. Comments with the song words are marked "Not for publication", That is the timid, bashful disposition of the man. So I Hear by Earl Walsh Had a pleasant surprise as I walked into Ye Olde Plaindealer editorial room one day last week. Kenneth Boley, a native who moved away, came up to shake hands. • It was a fun visit as Kenneth recalled people and events of yesteryear in McHenry. * All his memories are pleasant. He even had some good things to say about "Biff" Meyer. Yes, he did! They are known by their many friends as Ray and Mae, a popular couple residing on Hanley Street. \ On Saturday, they celebrated their golden wedding an niversary with their family coming to honor them. Mae hasn't been in the best of health, but this perky little gal has made a comeback. Good wishes and prayers showered upon the happy couple. Bob Adams says I forgot one after-school chore boys had on their list way back vften. We had to fill the reservoir in the wood burning cook stove with water. What wasn't used evaporated. No modern day humidifiers. What's more. If the reservoir wasn't filled, how could we take a Saturday night bath? A1 Blake thoughtfully arranged a foursome to go out for lunch. Walter Carey is back in the old home town so A1 invited George "Double Dribble" Barbian and myself to join them. Walter has an astounding memory that took us through laugh-provoking memories of our younger days. That was fun. We asked Lorraine Gausden about her father, Petie Schaefer, since we hadn't seen him in some time. Learned he is OK, but may be not as vocal as a year ago when the White Sox, were on top. " * Next year, Petie. The last out had hardly been made the night when the Cubs sewed up the pennant before our niece, Kathy Blake Ortell, phoned us from Kenosha. She knew how happy I would be. A Cub fan, she is. A Sox fan, she is not. L-- So happy when Kathy called. How else would I know the good news? Know comes Gene Huff with a Chicago Tribune with bold headlines: WHITE SOX WIN PENNANT! Of course, this Trib was dated September 23, 1959. WHOOPS! I forgot that some well-wisher spend 54 cents postage to send me a Sun-Times with a complete report on the Cubs. A real treasure. NIMC announces opening of audiology department Do you catch yourself asking people to repeat themselves? Does your family comment on the volume of the television when they come into the room, 'Are you deaf?'. Is your child doing poorly in school? Do you suspect the child may have a learning disability? It may not be a learning disability at all. These are signs of hearing impairment. Northern Illinois Medical Center has recently opened an Audiological Services Depart ment for both general inpatient and the outpatient population. The concept of audiology refers to the study of the auditory process, or hearing disorders. People who have hearing problems will usually complain of having difficulty in communication or not hearing certain aspects of their en vironment The audiologist is in a position to evaluate the auditory mechanism. The goal of audiologic assessment is to determine whether a hearing problem can be helped by medical intervention with the use of amplification devices. The audiology department is located on the second floor of the medical center and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Appointment times must be arranged by contacting Marybeth Rosetti, the staff audiologist. - v ^ 'r: 1219 N GREEH ST -McHEHRY BAKERY •DELlCATttStW 'jet CKiM PARigUR L J* I <l1S)M44U>0l2)SnMW r: 1 "l * § I. % I f; I $ L: The man posed this question: "Didn't I send you the.words to this song about four years ago?" Honoring the request, I wouldn't think of printing the man's name. He added, "As soon as Alvina's health is restored, it would be good for you to revise your filing system. This extra shopping is starting to take its toll on you." What filing system? How can I remember four years ago? Maybe forty years! Trail of the Lonesome Pine In the Blue Ridge Mountain of Virginia, On the trail of the lonesome pine, In the pale moonshine our hearts en-twine, Where she carved her name and I carved mine. Oh! June like the mountains I'm blue, Like the pine I am lonesome for you; In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, On the trail of the lonsome pine. 9-20-84 SIH: - Your tales of long ago bring back memories to most of us. There has been no mention of that BOON (or HAZARD) of our young days - Epson Salts. It had up-front position in most medicine chests. Everyone acquainted with the potion must have some lingering memories. , K. Brown f Ah, memories! Epson salts had a close rival in those days gone by--Castor oil. Parents would say, „ "Hold your nose and swallow this fast." I can still taste that blamed stuff.
