PAGE22 -PI AINDKAI FR HERALD, FRIDAY,OCTOBER 12,19«4 Sports Skyhawk spikers battle at tourneys The Johnsburg Skyhawk girls' volleyball team has every right to be tired. After playing five matches at a; tournament Friday and Saturday at Chicago Latin High School, the girls took advantage of the Columbus Day holiday Monday to go to Zion to play thfree more. For good measure, the Skyhawks took on Lake ZUrich in a Northwest Suburban Conference match Tuesday. "They're not used to such constant competition," John sburg coach Sharal Johnson said. "It was difficult for most of them. They've never played more than one match in a night." Losing all five matches at Latin didh't help matters much. "It was a real strong tour nament," Johnson said. "Some of the top Class A teams in the state were involved. THE SKYHAWKS faced Lisle, St. Ignatius, Mendota, Quincy Notre Dame and Latin, "we won one game against St. Ignatius." Johnson said. "We really should have beatenb them. Against Mendota, I started the sub stitutes, and they scored six points in the first game. Then the starters played the second game, and they got six points, we also shouldve beaten Latin. They're younger than we are," Johnson said of her junior- oriented team. "Against Quincy Notre Dame (last year's Class A state champs), we played the best we did in the whole tournament. We lost the first game 11-15, but we stayed with them," Johnson said. IN THE ZION affair Monday, the Skyhawks claimed the consolation championship. Johnsburg finished second in last yearns Zion tournament. "We played Lake Forest in the first match, and they're un defeated this year. So we lost right away." The Skyhawks then faced two NWSC opponents, the first of which was Round Lake. "We won in three games. It was a tough match, the Skyhawk coach said. Johnsburg then met Grant, with the Skyhawks prevailing in straight games, to claim the consolation title. JOHNSON SAID the events were beneficial to her team in that it took some of the pressure off of their conference season. "Seeing good competition helped them. They see girls their same age, their same height, and they want to be that good. They want to play like them," she said. "Some of the other teams had sophomores who were just going crazy out there. It really fired our girls up." The Skyhawks returned home to face Lake Zurich Tuesday, and came away with a hard- fought 16-18, 15-4, 15-6 win. "Arlet Mann played super," Johnson said. Cris May and Laura Oeffling had a lot of kills, and they both served well." Johnson also noted the return of setter Deb Tvaroh to the lineup. "That helps us a lot," Johnson admitted. Johnsburg, 9-5 overall, 7-4 in the NWS(f hosted Marengo yesterday before taking on Richmond at home Monday.
