Day/Bow Window By United Press International VIRGINIA CITY, Mont. - Twice a week Sheriff Johnny France straps on his .44 Magnum pistol, saddles his horse and leads a posse for suspected killers through the rugged mountains of southwestern Montana -- often at his own expense. Sometimes he takes as many as 14 heavily armed deputies to search the Spanish Peaks and the Madison-Gallatin mountain ranges about 50 miles north of Yellowstone National Parte. Sometimes it's Just himself and his favorite mount, Bambino. Sheriff France vows to bring in Don Nichols and his son Dan, suspected of kidnapping a local college student and killing the dude ranch manager who tried to rescue her. The sheriff swears he'll find the Nicholses. He says it's only a mat ter of time and the coming of winter works to his advantage over the 1,400 square miles of snow-dusted Rockies where the search takes place. Prance uses his own equipment and horse, paying the bills from his own pocket. Madison County's tiny budget can't meet the ex penses without the help, he says. Don Nichols, 53, and Dan, his 19- year-old son, are accused of kid napping and wounding Montana State University student Karl Swenson last July as she Jogged through a heavily wooded area near Big Sky, Mont., and of killing Alan Goldstein as he attempted to rescue her. Goldstein, a Flint, Mich., businessman turned duide ranch manager, is believed to have entered the camp site with a drawn revolver to rescue Swenson and announced the area was sur rounded as he pointed the weapon at the younger Nichols. Authorities say the father, ap parently taking Goldstein by sur prise, raised a weapon and fired instinctively to protect his son and felled the would-be rescuer. "Nobody has spotted any trail yet, but I'm searching every drainage in the area," France said. "The Nicholses are known to winter in the mountains ranging from Yellowstone Park all the way north to the Canadian Rockies. If they're gone now I'm sure they'll be back. "I've searched every known hole in the mountains so far. l{ they left the area I'm sure they'lj return," he said. "And once we have proof they're in the area all hell will break loose. Expenses won't be a factor." France waves away as unim'r portant his own investment in the quest. "We'll get the Nicholses; regardless of the cost. Rest assured they are vigorously wanted," he said. Once snow falls in the area, he said, "the mode of search will change." France describes the elder Nichols as long-bearded. He and his son are referred to by local authorities as "mountain men."
