School paper wins awards By Carol Stevens PlilndiikfHwtU News S«rvlce The Johnsburg Weekly News, a publication put out by the students in the Newspaper and Graphics program at Johnsburg High School, was recently the recipient of three awards. The first was awarded by the Columbia Scholastic Organiza­ tion, which gave the paper a "Silver Crown" award, making it eligible for competition this winter for the "Gold Crown." Only a few papers are awarded this each year. The second award came from the National Scholastic < Press Association, from which the paper received a four-star rating. This qualifies the paper for an "All American" award. According to Robert Gough, principal, only 70 awards were given out last year. The third and most prestigious contest is run by thq Quill an<f Scroll, the national journalism honor society. In this competition, the evaluation of the paper earned Area students graduate Five McHenry area students were among the 981 who received degrees during August com­ mencement exercises at Northern I l l i n o i s U n i v e r s i t y ( N I U ) , DeKalb. Two students, Denise Tigwell Hay and Constance M. Sanders, both of McHenry, were awarded Master of Science in Education degrees. The editors and graphic arts students were commended at a re­ cent school board meeting. Randy Swikle, the teacher who sponsors the paper, commented, "The paper is not printed for the pur­ pose of winning awards, but they are useful for evaluating the job that is done." He mentioned that students put in many hours to see that the paper is published each week. He also noted that the graphic arts students played an important role in the paper's production each week, since the paper is printed at the school.
