SFCTION 2 - PAGE 6 - PLAIN DEALER HERALD. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17.1984 New program helps the victims of Misunderstandings about in surance rates and do^Mf fe employers about job perftfltaWBF often stand in the way of disabled men and women who seek jobs. Bringing together employers and prospective employees is the goal of the new Job Raising program introduced by the Chicago- Northern Illinois Chapter, Na tional Multiple Sclerosis Society. The program for men and women who have multiple sclerosis was announced this week by Nancy Koch, Job Raising com mittee chairperson, who outlined steps to be taken by those ssking employment and by volunteers who will be ready to help them. "Across the country, our surveys show that 93 percent of all persons with multiple sclerosis have prior work experience," Ms. Koch says. "However, only 25 per cent are currently employed. Job Raising is for those who are will ing to consider a return to work." Such individuals are urged to call Catherine Wilson, director of Chapter services at the MS Socie ty (312-922-8000), who will send a self-screening inventory to help determine if the program would be valuable to them. The Inventory concerns such issues as physical impairment, fiscal implications of employment and personal attitudes. Upon com pleting an interview by telephone or in person, interested persons will be invited to "Job Readiness Training." This series of eight weekly sessions addresses two main topics: how persons feel about their disability in regard to work; and how the mastery of job- seeking skills leads to placement. Two sites have been selected for. the first job readiness sessions. They will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon Fridays beginning Nov. 16 at the MS office at 53 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, and during the same hours on Mondays beginning Nov. 19 at the MS office in Naper- ville at 24W 500 Maple Ave. Following training, the job seeker is assigned a volunteer from the business community who will help develop employment possiblities. As a final step, a Job Club will be created to enable those looking for work to ex change information and provide mutual support. Ms. Koch explains that, "Job Raising should not be confused with programs which seek pledges of jobs or those that de-emphasize qualifications. Nor is it a program of vocational training. It is £ means for persons with multiple sclerosis to help themselves become employed on a basis of their abilities and experience." Multiple sclerosis, a disease of the central nervous system, af fects an estimated 17,500 persons in the 17-county-side area served by the MS Chapter. Most often diagnosed in persons between 15 and 50 years old, MS has no known cause or cure.
