' Q-"I read your column about profits. What's wrong ith making a profit?"-- D. A-The profit motive is all important in the life of North Americans, but insurance companies that underwrite health and life policies for elder citizens have been found to pay out as little as 18 cents on the dollar received in premiums. Can any resonable person believe that the pay-out should not be greater, not such a whopping big profit? Q-"My mother said her mother told her she learned how to swimm as a child way back in 1915 with water wings. What were water wings?"--Kathryn B. A-The youngsters in 1915, when there were no park- sponsored programs to teach swimming, could purchase water wings and use . them to teach themselves. The yrater wings were fashioned from water-proof fabric. The learner would blow into an air tube in the wings to inflate them, then secure a harness on the wings across the chest. Each wing fitted under an arm. Boy or girl thus could keep head above water and paddle. The learner could realy swim--with water- wing support. Soon, after suf ficient practice, the youngster could swim without the water wings, and progress from there to become a champ swimmer maybe. Q-"I wrote to you two months ago for my mother who is unable to write very well. My father died in 1978 and my mother never did receive the $250 Social Security death benefit. My motherwho is 80 said to keep the stamped en velope she sent you. Thanks for nothing."--Mabel K. A-'Tm sorry 1 have no record of Mabel's first letter. Perhaps she and her mother will be forgivingg if they know that I receive hundreds of letters every week from readers. Their letter inn# have been lost in this cluttereacffice. Now to answer the question: Mabel should make her complaint to SS in writing. If Mabel again gets what she described as the go- around: the she can go to her congressperson's local office, where they can advise her ' competently.
