PAGE2. PLAINPEALEW HERALD. FRIDAY.pCTOBER It, 1984 Opinion/Politics Traditional beauty goes out of style A few weeks ago we passed a friendly little girl in a shopping center. Her appealing smile prompted us to please her with an admiring look at a cherished doll she held tightly. What we saw was a most unattractive face with shaggy yarn hair and an outfit definitely far from baby's high fashion. Could this be a Cabbage Patch doll? With no youngster in our immediate family, we were only an unwilling spectator to the unprecedented 1983 Christmas barrage of doll counters nationwide. Not wishing to dii countenances that caused parents and grandparents to gather by the hundreds outside every store that advertised a Cabbage Patch doll for sale? Nothing was beneath their dignity as the pushed, shoved, , we could oi our ily guess, in the days that followed, ' almost every encounter with tots revealed the same ugly- faced doll and the same ex pressionless eyes staring into space. Apparently the beautiful autumn days of early October had encouraged an unusual number of yoi\ng mothers to walk with their offspring. Could it be that these were the M usin' &, anderin BY KAF begged and bid at inflated prices-all for the chance (and only a chance) to bring a plain- faced toy doll to a favorite child. The Cabbage Patch craze is one of an increasing number of evidences that beauty no longer reigns as the goal toward which we must all strive. Do you remember when only the most beautiful features on the silver screen brought a line at the theater box office? Recall the heroines of the last dozen movies you saw. The Marilyn Monroes appear oc casionally but they're greatly outnumbered by the plain Janes that could be your sister, your daughter-or even you! There is something reassuring in the shifting emphasis from beauty to something more realistic for the average gal to attain. The lessening emphasis on good looks doesn't begin and end with dolls and people either. Visit an auto show and you'll have to look for something to excite you sufficiently to open four billfold. Compared to the Public pulse Test site meets opposition besides attractive appearance iently to open long, sleek models of a couple of decades ago, the little runts have to bid for attention on their technical qualities or the ability to travel more miles than a competitor on a gallon of The world of art, too, undergone a metamorphosis that often departs from beauty for the sake of realism. Grand- Dear Editor: Hie purpose of this letter is to state my strong objection to an experimental landfill being constructed on Shamrock Farm. I have many reasons for my objection - decrease in property value, increased traffic on the road, pollution of the air and ibly our drinking water, reasons are rather ob vious to everyone. What might not seem so ob- v ous is that the McHenry City C Mincil is making decisions that affect the people who do not live in the City of McHenry; people like my family (and our neigh bors) who live next to Shamrock Farm but do not live in McHenry city limits. We have no representation in the City Council. The Revolutionary War was fought over , "taxation without representation." This is "Garbage without represen tation." Stephanie Henry ma proudly hung a basket of fruit or a vase of flowers lovely to see. Today, art lovers see another kind of beauty in the same f fruit and flowers put onto canvas in a way that allows the viewer to decide for himself whether it's a banana or a pickle, a snapdragon or a dandelion. Maybe it's the trend away from traditional beauty that prompted the do-your-own thing philosophy of recent years, it sure makes it easier for some of us who would never measure up to tradition.
