Lamplighters carrieson that "sold-out" tradition By James Clifford United Press International : • SAN FRANCISCO - The people Cn the box office at the Lamplighters Theatre must feel v- to use a line from "The fllikado" -- that "they'd none of Micin be missed." -I That's not to imply, as in "The Pirates of Penzance," that their Mot is not a happy one." But so ihany performances are sold out, ty's often a matter of simply tell- Jng disappointed callers "sorry." It's been that way for many of the years that the theater has per formed Gilbert and Sullivan thusicals. The Lamplighters, 180 unpaid professionals except for a few ^taff members and the orchestra, 3s keeping alive a tradition that peemed threatened with the Riding a few years ago of the fam- fcd D'Oyly Carte company in England. The San Francisco troupe even has some of the postumes once used by the British. £ "We are one of the oldest Gilbert and Sullivan companies in 1 I i « vvublr NOV. 5th, 6th A 7th NO APPOINTMENT NEEDED HOURS: 10 AM to 2 PM A 3 PM to 6 PM CHRISTMAS PORTRAITS AVAILABLE (£AUc0t€H& PttcAayt Vignetted 'PviOuMU ^ S14-!L_ Rrquirrd Twelve -- Deluxe Wallets One -- 8 x 10 Portrait Two -- 5x7 Portraits ChildrM 12 Years Or Yotrnftf Liaiit ON PACKAGE PER Svkitti 1 kn fockat* Im |f««f W two m lew. Warsaw, 74, holds the world's non-irrigated corn yield record of 338 bushels an acre. To get an idea of the magnitude of that ac complishment. the U.S. Departs ment of Agriculture has projected an average statewide yield in Il linois this year of 113 bushels an acre. The state record average is 131 bushels in 1982. Even in the drought years of 1980 and 1983, Warsaw produced well over 200 bushels an acre in some fields and 271 bushels an acre this fall. Warsaw and his wife Evelyn have greeted visitors to their McLean County farm from South America, Canada, France, Japan, China and Israel, among other countries. Many U.S. farmers also have come to the Warsaw farm to study Warsaw's farming methods. The Savoy, another volunteer- run Gilbert and Sullivan group in Philadelphia, has been in ex istence since near turn of century, but only does one production a year. "We put on 14," Beman noted. "Not only is (Lamplighters) uni que in America for its repertory, but also for its longevity and critical successes," he said. Beman estimates that since the Lamplighters started in the 1950s, they have been seen by more than a quarter-million people in 1,500 performances of nearly 220 separate productions, not in cluding those on television. The most performed work is "The Mikado," followed by "HMS Pinafore." Since 1968, the Lamplighters have been putting on shows at a theater with a seating capacity of 500, an improvement from the ear ly days of scrambling for space at suburban theaters. They also have an office and a warehouse. % • MEN'S SALE Men's Sportswear Youna Men's Sportswear Men's Furnishings 18.99 Arrow Quilted Outershirts.
