It's a challenge, however, that won't be played out on the athletic field, but rather, in classrooms as they start propping for the fourth annual U.S. Academic Decathlon (USAD). And this year, the students will have a new player on their team - one noted for its com­ mitment to education - World Book, Inc., publishers of The World Book Encyclopedia. More than 27,000 high schools in the U.S. and Canada were invited by mail this week to take part in the 1984-85 competitions, which as in previous years in­ clude rigorous, objective tests in economics, fine arts, history, language and literature, mathematics, science and essay writing; in addition to public speaking. Ultimately the high school teams - each composed of two "A," two "B" and two "C" students - will face off in April before cheering fans and television cameras for the USAD Super Quiz. Last year, USAD involved approximately 800 high schools in 29 states - growing dramatically from the com­ petition's modest, Southern California beginnings in 1968 when Dr. Robert Peterson, Orange County Superintendent offered country of Schools, set put to "put more exitement and enthusiasm back into our schools."
