Don't they appear to be talking less in circles and more in vectors while explaining, rather than recapitulating, action on the screen? Wed, Marty Glickman Is doing all he can to ensure that the trend continues. He is the tutor for all the NBC broadcasters. In 1977, Merlin CXsen men­ tioned to Michael Wiseman, executive producer of Sports, that he could use a coach. Now, thrice weekly, the former voice of the New York Giants, Jets and Knicks studies tapes of his charges exercising their tongues, noting both their irritating habits and unique approaches, mixed meta­ phors and inspired analo­ gies, and then tells them exactly how he was affect­ ed by their performances ̂ "I watch like a fan would." explains the 67- year-oid Glickman, himself once a wbrld-class sprinter on the 1936 Olympic track team. "I don't have any preconceptions of what makes a good broadcast, of what's toojast a delivery or too slow. I just want to get them to apply to broad­ casting the same intensity and commitment that they applied to their lives as ballplayers. "But how long did it take for these guys to become great athletes? Ten years? Fifteen years of their, lives devoted to perfecting their game? And then they're told: 'Here's a blazer Go do a broadcast'?" At such a ridiculous request Glick­ man pshaws, the miserable fates met by such gridiron luminaries as Sonny Jur- genson and Johnny Unitas still vivid in his memory. To complement his students' new and improved craftsmanship and grammar, Glickman encourages each of them to nurture and utilize their own frames of reference: The idea is to develop a stream of consciousness delivery that appears under control, one which neither frightens nor bores the gen­ tle viqwer. "I was once helping ex- boxer Sugar Ray Leonard with the fundamentals of his technique, when in the middle of the first round of a fight he whispered to me: "He's gonna go down in the next round.' I said: 'For God's sake, say it.' But he shook his head as if he were afraid of being spon­ taneous. And sQif enough, just like Ray predicted, down the guy went in the second. For years they've, been under the influence of coaches criti­ quing their every on-field move.
