NOVEMBER 7. 1984 Sports Johnsburg crushed by Grant on 'rough night' POX LAKE -- Johnsburg's foot ball ended its 1984 season on a dismal note, dropping a 40-10 deci sion to Grant Friday night. ' The loss lowered the Skyhawks' overall mark to 4-5 on the year, 3-4 in the Northwest Suburban: "It was a very, very rough even ing," understated Johnsburg coach Handy Oberembt. Oberembt said he had hoped the Skyhawks would catch Grant on a down note, after the Bulldogs lost successive games to Marian Cen tral and Lake Zurich, knock-in? them out the NWSC title chase. ' We had thought they'd be a lit tle flat," Oberembt said. "But they played real well." THE ONE bright spot in the Johnsburg camp was the play of quarterback Mark DuRei. The senior broke the Skyhawks' single-season passing mark, as he finished with 1,187 yards through the air, an 86-for-l93 campaign. He also threw for 12 touchdowns. - "He had a super year," com plimented Oberembt. It was, however, small consolation as Johnsburg suffered its second worst defeat of the season, the worst a 32-0 bombing by Lake Zurich. THE BULLDOGS jumped out to a 34-3 halftime lead. "They came right out at us," Oberembt said. "They just shoved it right down our throats. They played a good ballgame." The only Skyhawk score in they first half came on a Mike Majer- cik field goal of 33 yards. The boot cut the Grant lead to just 7-3. "We thought we had them a lit tle bit," Oberembt said. "But they came right back and scored. We threw an interception after that, and before we knew it, it was 34-3. "We've never been in a position like that before. Never." In the fourth period, senior Ralph Stark scored on a five-yard run, and Majercik's kick ac counted. for the final Johnsburg point. . "WE MOVED the ball pretty well against ^hem," Oberembt said of the Skyhawks, who compil ed 250 total yards. We just didn't score." The Skyhawk coach said the Johnsburg defense couldn't con tain the potent Grant attack. "Defensively, we did nothing." If Oberembt would have been of fered a 4-5 campaign in the pre season, would he have taken it? "No, I don't think so. The game that hurt us was Grayslake. I would have taken 5-4, given what we had. We had a good season. "Our seniors did a super job all year. Our center, Tom Kinney played well, and our captains, DuRei, (Mark) Dumelle and (Harry) Giovanni all had great years." Oberembt has big plans for the '85 Skyhawks. "Our sophomores were 7-1-1. We'll have 23 juniors returning. That's encouraging. Ease Your Planting Time Workload Apply FS Nitrogen This Fall By Sam Natrop PUiadMlar-Hcrald News Servicc CARPENTERS VILLE - A lot of people were hugging, crying, yelling and cheering, but one person- Woodstock volleyball coach Sharon Little- was laughing. Sne wasn't laughing after hearing a joke, and wasn't laughing after seeing sommeone get hit in the face with a cream pie. But she was laughing the best kind of laugh: the "I told- you-so laugh. And whereas the Blue Streak coach might never get the chance to look each of her skeptics in the eye and say "I tola you so," she obviously feels pretty good along with her hugging, crying, yelling, cheering team and its faithful fans. The Streaks will make only their second trip ever to the IHSA Class AA state volleyball tournament after they defeated Moline in the Dundee--Crown Supersectional Saturday night. And, for only the second time during post-season play, the Streaks took the best-of-five match in three games. Wood stock was a 15-4, 15-11, 15-6 winner. It's only post-season match which needed five games to settle was against Fox Valley Conference champ Crystal Lake Central -in the McHenry Regional finale. "In my heart, 1 /new we were capable of doing this, of playing this well," Little said. "In your heart you've got to believe. If you don't believe, it's not worth the time and effort you spend out there in. practice.'. The win make every bump, set and spike drill a little easier to handle for the Streaks, who will play the winner of the Mother McAuley and Riverside- Brookfield match in Match Seven of the state finals at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield. The Streaks' victory was a near carbon copy of their three-game Jacobs Sectional championship win over Antioch Thursday night.. One of the keys to the Streaks' success through the post season has been the momentum factor-a valuable commodity in girls' volleyball. Woodstock has been able to grab that momentum early and, although it's lost from time to time, the Streaks never lose it too long. "Nobody gave this team a shot at it. I believe the day we stepped onto the court that these girls had it in them," Little said. "It's been frustrating for some of the seniors who are on the bench, but they've come to realize their roles on this team and they are performing them well." The Streaks were favored by some to win the FVC, but finished fourth. Why spend valuable time applying Nitrogen next spring when , " you can get that job out of the way this fall.
