Hospital to offer free tests to detect 'hidden diabetic' SECTION 2 - PACE 1 - PLAINDEALER HER ALD. WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER 1 . Northern Illinois Medical Center (McHenry Hospital) will join with some 90 other hospitals throughout' Chicago and nor­ thern Illinois to oner free blood ; sugar testing Nov. 12 through 17. • The program is part of a • nationwide effort to discover the ."hidden diabetic." : The tests will be given without •charge and will be held as a 'public service to the com­ munity. Appointments are necessary so that waiting can be minimised. Times set for the diabetic screenings are: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.; Wed­ nesday, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Testing will take place in the lobby of McHenry Hall (the old McHenry Hospital building) at 4-H officers are elected Secretary and treasurers reports opened the Lincoln Cloverleafs 4-H Club meeting on Oct, 8. Newly elected officers are: President Amy Schaefer, Vice President Rachel Wolter, Secretary Becky Wolter, SEED PURCHASES '• The Illinois Department of Con­ servation's Division of Forestry ; and Natural Heritage still is seek­ ing tree and shrub seed to meet its, planting needs for the coming spr­ ing and has extended to Nov. 16 its deadline on purchasing seed from the public. Specific dietary restrictions are necessary. The test is most accurate when taken two hours after a meal con­ taining adequate-carbohydrate (sugars and starches). The following suggested menus are appropriate: Breakfast- fruit (banana, or large glass of fruit juice); one cup cereal (cooked or flake); one half cup milk; two teaspoons sugar; two pieces of toast or bread; one tablespoon jelly or jam; coffee or tea, decaf­ feinated only, with cream or sugar if desired. Lunch-Eat a normal break­ fast in the morning and one of the following: fruit (banana or large glass of fruit juice; meat or cheese sandwich (with two slices of bread); dessert (cake, pie, pudding, etc., one piece or serving; one cup milk; coffee or tea, decaffeinated only, with cream or sugar if desired. A seccond suggestion- hamburger and bun; small French fries or potato chips; dessert (cake, pie, pudding, etc., one piece or serving; large glass or can decaffeinated pop, not diet pop; coffee or tea, decaf­ feinated only with cream or sugar if desired. For an evening screening test, eat a normal breakfast and lunch and one of the test lunches above for your dinner. It is important to incclude all foods in the amounts listed in the sample menus. Persons should NOT drink (other than water), eat, smoke, chew gum, eat candy or cough drops, etc., following the meal, until after the test.
