NOVEMBER 7,1964 Neighborhood news Wonder Lake: Someone's missing and missed at the post office why ly, our postmaster, hasn't in at the nelm, it's because has been taking a little vacation, but not to some far-off island. She has been recuperating at home since she had to leave work Sept. 24. She collapsed in the post office because of a heart problem and in doing so, injured her back. She is in a back brace, and will be returning to work, but she's not sure exactly when. With all of her energy and drive, I'm sure she'll be back in no time at all. TOY DEMONSTRATION Just in time for Christmas shopping, Nativity Lutheran Church will be holding a toy demonstration Saturday, Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. These will be educational toys, manv not found in stores, which will help with a child's development, along with being fun to just play with. The demonstrator will be showing how a child develops physically knd mentally and what toys are helpful for each stage. Fifteen percent of the profit goes back to the church, so you U be able to get some Christmas shopping out of the way and at the same time, help Nativity. HANDI-HELPERS The Greenwood area 4-H club, the Handi-Helpers, will be holding their annual Club Achievement Night Nov. 26, at 7 ^ m., at the Greenwood ethodist Church. This is the night when members will be awarded pins, their honors, and receive money from their fair projects. Anne Sowers 653-9549 The Handi-Helpers recently received a blue ribbon for their window display at the west side facility of the Wonder Lake State Bank, in recognition of National 4-H Week, which was the first week of October. Eighteen clubs throughout the area participated. The Handi-Helpers, like other 4-H groups, are open to boys and girls between the ages of 8-18. This group encompasses young people from the Greenwood area, west side of Wonder Lake, and even the north side of Woodstock. They meet the first Monday of every month in homes of their members. Lynn Sobczak is the group leader and would like to hear from anyone who might be interested in joining tneir group by calling her at 648-2321. SUCCESSFUL PARTY Thirty-two young people celebrated Halloween by at tending the American Legion Auxiliary Halloween party Oct. 28. They enjoyed games and refreshments that were supplied by auxiliary members, along with the help of Wonder Lake and McHenry merchants. Winning prizes for their costumes were: ages 1-3, Mickey Moore; 4-7, Tara Lee; 7- 12, Jason Walker; funniest, Randy Radosh; most original, David and Kevin Minsky; and best costume, Dawn Walters. A good time was had by all and the ladies are hoping to see everyone back again next year. BAKE SALE The ladies of Hickory Falls Lakeland Park: It's birthday time Mike Harazin turned five years old Oct. 30, and celebrated with classmates and friends at a local restaurant Oct. 29. Proceeds from this 2 event will help defray costs of a Christmas party to be held in December for the children of Hickory Falls subdivision. ESSENCE OF CHRISTMAS The "Essence of Christmas" has turned out to be an annual event looked forward to by the community as a way to start off the holiday season. The ladies of Nativity Lutheran Church work for many months creating craft projects that will appeal to all ages. Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be served throughout the day, along with a puppet show being put on for the young visitors. Baked goods and homemade candy will also be available, along with objects from the craft bazaar. All this will take place Saturday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to p.m., at Nativity Lutheran Church. WDSTK. CROSS COUNTRY Marty Sobczak has certainly begun his head cross-country coaching position with a this year at Woodstock School. The varsity boys team will be traveling on to sectionals in Niles to compete, having already come in second in the competition. Wonder /s on the team are A1 Boyce, Ken Glaves and Dennis 'Murray. Joy Sobczak, a freshman, has really had a great season coming in first for the Wood stock Blue Streaks every meet except one. She will be the only girl competing in the sectionals at Niles from Woodstock High. Other area students involved with cross-country this year were Connie Manke, Karen Sch midt and Kirk fSlgar. SPECIAL & NOT SO 'Happy Birthday" to that champion runner, Joy Sobczak who will be celebrating her birthday Nov. 12. In the not so special category, we have John Glaves this week. John could be seen Halloween night running after his car that backed itself out of the drive, stopping in the neighbor's busies.
