Annie a winsome waif who charms audience Page 5 • PLAIN DEALER HERALD. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7.19IH With slips and slurs of pcku^i i campaigns winding down, we were pleasantly returned to the delightful world of another era on the stage of the Woodstock Opera House last Friday evening. The musical was "Annie". < * 9j ,V* j The United States was in the \ midst of the Great Depression. i The difference in the problems * then and now was that in the I space of less than three hours, J through the magic of a comic (strip character, the spirit and charm of one little girl inspired her country's leaders to do £ ,sommething about the dilemma, j* The outcome was the New Deal. j& The little girl who acc- \< complished this miracle of her j&time on opening night was a bundle of bounce wrapped up in 10-year-old Danielle Renee JjCKohl of Lockport, 111., who jjFree RTA ^passes still ught a list of credits which the not only lived up to but surpassed. This was the age of the early radio soap operas headed by Helen Trent. It was the brashy time of the Dusenberg car and the terrifying days of Dillinger. Franklin D. Roosevelt was portrayed most realistically by Allan Smith of McHenry, who made his appearance in the wheelchair so closely identified with the late president. Displaying an authentic accent, complemented by the familiar, long cigaret holder, and with head held high, Smith was convincing in the F.D.R. role. Judith Irwin, also of McHenry, tripled her talents, playing, in turn, Sophie the Kettle, Cabinet Member Frances Perkins, and a member of the Warbucks household staff. Her daughter, Robin Irwin, displayed a flair tor the stage which close observers have admired as they watched the young MCHS senior mature. As Grace Ferrell she played a prominent part in the household and business life of Daddy Warbucks, the billionaire who took Annie into his home and his heart as the tale unfolded. * -' v • • . 1 ' A Tiny Robin Olszewski, as Angel, and Kathleen Tiffany, as Duffy, appeared with a group of most talented youngsters who portrayed children in the or phanage from which Annie managed to escape. Others frock; this area who played prominently jn the cast were Jon Wills as Cabinet Member Hull, toad Steve Miskocki as Drake, the butler. One of thtf best comedic performances the Opera House stage was turned in by Frank J. Olivo, Jr., of NapervUle, who belongs on the professional stage. In a cast that exuded talent, everyone's favorite was Striker, the prize winning Golden Retriever, as Annie s loyal side-kick Sandy. The red- haired Annie and the red- furred dog made a combination that produced a winner.
