"My Fellow Americans: An Inaugural Address if I Were Elected President," is the theme chosen for an essay contest sponsored by the Woodstock-McHenry League of Women Voters. Young adults, seniors in high school ! age 21 are eligible to Contestants must live McHenry County. The writer of the best essay will receive a $100 savings bond and a one-year membership in the League of Women Voters. The winner's essay will be printed in the McHenry Plaindealer-Herald the week of Jan. 21,y 1AQ&. In addition, the winners inaugural address will be broadcast on local radio station WIVS on Inauguration Day. Jan. 21, 1985. All entries must be limited to 350 words, double-spaced and typed or hand-written on only one side of paper. Entries should be accompanied by an entry a separate tni inch card with entrant's name, form or a separate three by five int's name, age (as of Jan. 21, 1985), ad dress, phone number and school. Entries will be p re-screened by a panel of judges from the League of women Voters. Judges' for the 10 finalists' essays will include radio sonality and columnist Bellairs, sports writer and noted public speaker Dave Condon and State Sen. Jack Schaffer. Entries must be post-marked no later than Dec. 4. The decision of the judges is final. Sgt. Hoy H. Breede, stationed in Pirmasens, Germany, recently completed a Primary Leadership Development course at the 7th United States Army Non Commissioned Officer Academy in Bad Toelz, Ger many. "•Hie Academy," which is boused in the former German S.S. Officer school dating back to 1934, arrived from Munich in October, 1958. The four-week course in basic leadership skills consisted of work load distribution, work procedure improvement, counselling, recommending disciplinary actions, map reading, drill and ceremony, physical training, troop leading procedures (eombat) and correcting personnel. The course is in an environment of created stress to evaluate a non commissioned officer's potential in stressful situations found in combat. Sgt. Breede graduated "First Honor Graduate" which was second academically, with a total of four demerits in a class of approximately 135. Demerits were assessed for uniform and barracks inspection deficien cies, failure to follow in structions, "fcteCurity violations, etc. In addition, Breede received the First Honor Plaque and a cash gift from the Army and Air Force Exchange System. The platoon he was a member of was designated "Honor Platoon" for that cycle. Breed's mother and step father, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kuck, attended the graduation ceremony. SGT. ROY H. Childrens' Book Week can provide one more opportunity to highlight books and reading. The McHenry Public Library will feature award-winning books: the Caldecott books, with their artistic emphasis and the Newberry books for content. The kindergarten classes of McHenry will tour the library during the month of November.
