Page 19 • PLAIN DEALER HERALD. FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 9,1*4 Sports McHENRY •He had only one catch in the first two games, but he had faith in himself and his teammates, and he had some outstanding games I down the stretch." Schlender said Austen, who had five touchdown grabs, is one of the finest receivers in the Fox Valley The Warriors' wingback, Mike Schultz, is also a junior, and Schlender said he expects big things from both in 1985. "They're both not real big, but they're fast, have great concen tration. and have suoer hands." S C H U L T Z C A U G H T a touchdown pass and a two-point conversion toss in last week's season-ending win over Cary- Grove. "Curt was getting double- coverage^ so Schultz was always open. I expect them both to make all-conference next year," Schlender said. Schlender said Snyder and his offensive lin? mates should be honored by the Warriors' 1,829 yards rushing this past season. "Brad, as a tackle, trapped and helped open holes. He was almost always at the, point of attack. He also was an exceptional strong side linebacker. A real total foot ball player." Snyder had 29 tackles, 53 assists, recovered two fumbles, h a d a n i n t e r c e p t i o n , t w o knockdowns and made eight tackles behind the line of scrim mage. "IN OUR comeback against Cary-Grove, I've never seen a bet ter five minutes of football than Brad Snyder played. He was mak ing tackles on the option play when it was run away from his side. He was like a man possess ed," Schlender said. "He had fire in his eyes, deter mination on his face. If that's the kind of kid we're turning out here at McHenry, we're fortunate. We must be doing something right." Hill was also named the top FVC quarterback in 1983 as a junior, when he threw for over 1,100 yards. This year, the left-hander threw for 904 .yards, on 60-for-136 ac curacy, a 44 percent ratio. He had 11TD passes, and rushed 47 times for 232 yards and a score. "His percentage was up this year, but his yards were down. That's simply because we threw 1 (Continued from page 20) about 35 or 40 times less than in 1983," Schlender noted. "Craig was not only a chosen leader, but an inspirational one as well. He showed grace under pressure so many times, it's dif ficult to count them. He's the best quarterback I've been involved with in 13 years of coaching," Schlender said. "No doubt he was the class of the conference at quarterback." Schlender also gave plaudits to senior lineman Mike Woo. "Linemen are discriminated against," he said "Mike Woo is ' just an outstanding football player, and I'm not so sure he's not better than some of the other that were named to the team. It's just unfortunate he plays with such great players on the line with him. "Mike played every down. If there's 60 or 70 plays a game, he's out there on every one. From the whistle to the gun, he was there. It's unfortunate linemen don't get the recognition they should," Schlender said. O t h e r n o t a b l e W a r r i o r statistics: Junior running back Dana Pitel rushed for 234 yards on 48 (otes, an average of 4.8 per carry. Junior back Jim Shaver, who missed the season's first three games with a shoulder in jury, came back to carry 53 times for McHenry, rolling up 381 yards in the process. His average was a hefty 7.2 per rush. siNK.*'* 3 a.?'? Water Warriors fourth in FVC HOMb From homes to horseshoes, find it i n the Classif eds.
