SECTION2.PAGE 2-PLAINDEALER HERALD, FRIDAY,NOVEMBER 9,1984 Republicans sweep 1934 clcctions Marriage licenses FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the (lies of Nov. 8, 1984) Democratic candidates won nationally in the Nov. 6 election, but Republican canidates made a clean sweep of McHenry County. Thomas A. Bolger, of McHenry, running as an unopposed Democrat in the eighth district was returned to office. He received good support from the local voters who ap preciate having a represen tative from this section at Springfield. Chauncey W. Reed won the seat of representative for the eleventh district in a close race with James A. Howell. County winners were Charles T. Allen, county judge; Raymond D. Woods, county clerk; Lester Edinger, county treasurer; Henry A. Nulle, county shefiff; and Ethel C. Coe, superintendent of schools. The regular monthly bills for McHenry were paid at the City Council meeting Monday night. They amounted to a little over $1,200. The remainder of the evening was devoted to discussions on the delinquent milk and vehicle licenses. Also, plans were discussed for raising money to nay for sewer in stallation of septic beds. T wice Told Tales A class of 133 children were confirmed in ceremonies presided over bv the Most Rev. E.F. Hoban, Bishop of the Rockford Diocese. Twelve priests joined him in the im pressive event. Some of the confirmands were Albert Adams, Clarence Adams, Leonard Blake, Jerome Buch, George Freund, Sylvia Freund, Joseph Gausden, Frances Glosson, Harold Freund, Doris Kennebeck , A lexande r Kloeckner, Marie Charlotte Nix, Donald Schaefer, Gordon Sch- mitt, Lester Smith, Robert Vogt, Mary Lou Weber, Beatrice and Virginia Williams, Edmund Wins and Mrs. Virginia Blake and Mrs. Alida Wirtz. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Nov. 9, 1944) In the national elections Roosevelt won 35 states with 413 electoral votes. In McHenry County a total of 21,098 voters went to the polls, a number somewhat short of the record turnout in 1949 of 22,917. While the majority of communities in the United States were casting ballots on the Democratic side of the ticket, McHenry township remained true to its Republican tradition. • We are all familiar with the quotation, "Everyone talks about the weather but no one does anything about it." A McHenry soldier who does do something about it is First Lieutenant Roy Gladstone, who predicts the weather. He is the son of the Maurice Gladstones and is stationed at Santa Rosa, Calif. Lt. Gladstone studied meteorology at the University of Chicago after enlisting in the services two years ago. He has one brother, Capt. Lee Glad stone, with the medioftl corps in Burma. Another brother, Lieut. Melvin Gladstone, a bombadier, lost his life last year in Europe. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Nov. 5, 1969) There is reflected pride for residents of McHenry in the announcement this past week that Dr. Owen Chamberlain, 38, grandson of a native of McHenry, was one of the two American physicists awarded the Nobel Prize for physics for their research into the nature of the atom and the discovery of the antiproton. Dr. Cham berlain is the grandson of Edwin Owen (an uncle of Harold Owen of McHenry) who was born on the Owen homestead near Landmark school. Now 98 years of age, Edwin Owen remains in good health and resides with a married daughter in Berkeley, Calif. * Announcement was made Wednesday by Gov. William Stratton of the state and federal 4 grant in the amount of $14,546 to the new McHenry County Mental Health Clinic. Headquarters for the clinic will be in the former Freund house on Waukegan Road, the use of which has been approved by the McHenry hospital board. The clinic will serve a wide area extending as far south as Elgin and west to the Rockford community. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Nov. 8,1974) A fast-moving tide resulting from apathy swept Democrats throughout the country into office at all levels of government Tuesday. In McHenry county, however, there was no change. All Republican candidates won support and were returned tc office with the exception of the sheriffs race, where Democrat Arthur Tyrrell won reelection for a second term. By defeating a former shefiff, John Carroll, he will be the first to hold that office for more than one term. Locally, all present office holders from McHenry, were returned to office. They are Thomas Huemann with a high vote of 8,382, followed by Walter J. Dean, board chairman, Edward J. Buss, and Willis J. Simms. Mayor Joseph Stanek signed a proclamation designating Nov. 11 as Veterans Day in McHenry. McHenry Barracks No. 1315 Veterans of World War I joined him. They were Commander Paul H. Leubscher, Clyde Black well, Howard "Pat" Cairns and Owen are in charge of Veterans Day activities.
