NOVEMBER 20.19S4 Sports awk cagers begin a season of question marks By Chris Juzwik ftaMMlar-lteraM sports editor > JOHNSBURG - If Johnsburg High School basketball coach Ben Beck were to pick a television show which most reminds him of IJhe 1984-85 Skyhawk team, he'd probably choose "The Twilight Zone." • For Beck and the Skyhawks, the coming season is a virtual trip into the unknown.' • "We have a lot of question iiarks," Beck said before his ^eam opened the season Tuesday •ight. "We have a young team. Quite a few juniors." ; The 'Hawks return four let- termen from an 11-14 campaign in $3-84, two of them starters. ; Returning will be 6-4 junior center Tim Shine, who started { v e r y v a r s i t y g a m e a s a sophomore, and 6-0 senior guard Jeff Nichols. Also back is last Ieason's sixth man, 6-2 forward lark DuRei. ! BECK SAID his other two starters will be juniors Bill Dust t6-2) and Rick Easterling (6-1). ?he other letterwinner back for Ihis season is 6-2 senior Bernard Wharton. J The fourth-year Skyhawk head c o a c h w i l l m i s s t h e n o w - graduated Jeff Preston, Joe Ma- jercik and Jeff Jayko, all starters last season. Preston was the {eam's leading scorer and re- bounder. Beck also noted the absence of jom Meehan, a varsity starter as a sophomore. Meehan was involv ed in a serious car accident bet ween his sophomore and junior years, and will not play for the ijkyhawks this season. He would be a senior. ! "He was a force for us when he was just a sophomore," Beck said •f Meehan. "His condition is im proving, but he won't be back." • JOHNSBURG will instead make with a group small in stature. e'll~play at a slower tempo tQan we have the last three years. IF11 be a down-tempo, but we'll sQll look for the break," Beck s$id. Beck said his team will not have the strength to pound the ball in side, as it did last year. "We just don't have the power. We'll have to finesse teams a bit more. Our personnel dictates that." Beck's personnel also forces him to stress the basics a bit more. "We're so young, with so many juniors. It's a big question mark." Rebounding is a main concern for Beck, who said the size -- or lack of it -- will force the Skyhawks to concentrate on screening out opposing players. "NO question we have to check off and get position. That will be an important factor if we're to do well. We can't rely on jumping ability to get rebounds. "This team does things well, but there are areas we must improve in. Rebounding is one." If You Beck said he has noticed a marked improvement in his squad since the opening practice. "There's been a big difference," he explained. "They've already got a better grasp of things. It's been a good start for us, the smoothest start in four years. I think this team can grow throughout the year, and really round into something." BECK said DuRei and Nichols will be looked to early to provide leadership on the court. DuRei is coming off an outstanding football season, where he became the all- time Johnsburg passing leader. "He just had a great football season at quarterback," Beck said. "He established himself as a leader. He and Jeff Nichols should lead the way for us." THE ELECTRONIC "" BY NEW HOME Friend check the PET SECTION of Classified. "We hope to use the depth and balance to our ad vantage," he said. "We have a lot of players who are pretty even, that's shown up in practice so far. We have many different players who can fill many different roles." Beck cited two of his team's ma jor goals for the upcoming cage campaign, and one of those will be there for the accomplishing right away. One of Beck's -- and the Skyhawks -- goals is to retain the chamftgmship of the Marian Cen t r a l T o u r n a m e n t , w h i c h Johnsburg has won two straight years. The event begins tonight, and continues Wednesday and Fri day in Woodstock. "We'd also like to be above .500. It's realistic, but challenging," he said. JOHNSBURG'S prospects of reaching the 50-50 mark rest on the team's ability to perform well in a highly competitive Northwest Suburban Conference. "Grant looks to be a cut above the rest," Beck said. "They're solid, and have everyone back. Grayslake, Lake Zurich, Marian Central and Marengo will be right there, and our hope is to make it into that group," he said. "The Northwest Suburban is a tough league," Beck . continued. "It's a very senior-oriented con ference." Beck said he believes his junior- oriented Skyhawks will be able to make the adjustment. "IT will come easier for them because of camps and a lot of off season work they've dohe. They've spent a lot of time, and worked very hard at it. They also have a very positive attitude," he said of his Skyhawks. "Their approach to what we want them to do is much better, and that has a lot to do with the f r e s h m a n a n d s o p h o m o r e coaches, Bill Hurckes and Dave Dombrowski. I'm very pleased with the job they're doing. The kids are coming up knowledgable, and it's really paying off." k x t if-- *' - . v , •, The Skyhawks' non-conference foes will include Richmond- Burton, Hampshire, North Boone and Fox Valley power Jacobs. "Our non-conference schedule has a lot of local flavor," Beck said. IN ADDITION to the Marian Central tournament, Johnsburg will again compete in the Nor thern Illinois Classic in Hamp shire over Christmas. The regular, home and con ference seasons will begin Friday, Nov. 30 with a bout against Marengo. "We've had a good start," Beck said. "How will we do? We'll just have to wait and see." The trek into the unknown has begun.
