SECTION 2. PAGE • - PLAIN DEALER HERALD. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, H«4 -- , , 1WT tmotn OT, r«4 . - • Deposit boxes rarely tampered with to offer cycle safety course again O-- *• In P®st years. McHenry ment and since thev be can. 569 Tt is cniH that AH nornt Q"~ "I had some valuable material taken from my safe deposit box in a bank. What should I do to try to get it back? " --Greta F. A-If no One else has a key to the box, Greta can go to the bank "management for an answer. It may be a matter for in vestigation. However,. Greta would do best to make certain that she has not mislaid the material. Cases of rifling single lock boxes are rare indeed. Q--"My mother is 68 and lives in a rural area. She often has questions on retirement problems and benefits. I am unable to answer them. Could you suggest anything she can read that will help?"--Dottie B. A--Dottie should contact the state agency on aging. She can also send for an informative book that may have most of the answers: "Rights of the Elderly and Retired" by Attorney W. R. Wishard, distributed by Caroline House, P.O. Box 161, Thornwood, N.J. 10594. 1 Q--"I am a wheelchair patient of 75 years in a nursing home. You wrote that the allowance required to be paid out of Social Security to a patient in a nursing home each month under government rules is at least $25. Is that true?" --Elspeth J. A--Yes. Q---"My mother did not keep her will up to date. She changed banks and account numbers, so her will was void. Her great grandson got everything. Can you tell others how to avoid making such a mistake?"-- Doris Z. A--A will should be kept up to date, year by year. Q--"I am 80 and have two children. I made my last will in Wisconsin. Now I live in Iowa with my daughter. Has moving from one state to another made any difference in the execution of my will?"--Patricia F. A--Most probably. Q--^'My wUl sets up a trust for my wife upon my demise and then, after her demise it is to be turned over to a scholarship fund. The will is at the lawyer's office in New York State. I moved to North Carolina 10 years ago. I wonder if my will is valid here."-George H.J. A--It may not be, to make certain, George should see a lawyer. • Q--"I lost $6 on a big pot, at a Golden Age poker party when I shot the works on what I just knew was the winning hand. It was draw poker and my hand was four kings and a seven, but I didn't win. A man there had what he called a low straight flush and he took all the money. I said I would write and you would tell me the truth that my hand was the best no matter what they said. My husband just laughed."--Anette S.M. A--Anette failed to learn the first thing about poker, which is- -what beats which. To go less than fully instructed into a poker game, even among Golden Age friends, is something like walking on ice in wooden shoes- -when you start to slide, you're done for. No wonder Anette's husband laughed, although it was downright unkind of him to do so. A straight flush. Better luck next time for Anette. I hope she gets a royal flush in spades. Q--"I am 46 and in good health but I can't find a job. It is discrimination because of my age. Employers either want the very young or else they only want to pay minimum wages. What can I do?"--Joe B. > A--Keep on looking. While those of us past 65 have un derstanding and compassion for others who are less fortunate, I know of no senior who wouldn't trade places with Joe if he could. I would be willing to be out of a job and discriminated against if only I could be young and 46 again. As George Bernard Shaw said: "The trouble with youth is that it's wasted on young people." Q--"My wife and I want to^go to Europe as tourists. We worry about running into medical problems in foreign countries. Are American medications available in Europe." --Seth J. A--Not all perscriptions drugs used in U.S. are available overseas. Seth and his wife should take with them all medications they need on the trip. They should ask their doctor and druggist to tell them how they can get a precription filled in Belgium, Sweden, France, or wherever, if they lose their medication. Also, have the precriptions typed so a foreign druggist doesn't have to struggle with a doctor's hand- writting. " . Q--"Can you tell me what I will get in Social Security payments when I get my first check next January? I will be 62 then."--Michael H. A--That information can come only from the SS itself. If Michael will telephone the SS at Portland, he will receive ac curate answers to his questions. The SS number is toll free-1-800- 454-1654. Q--"I have been receiving supplemental security income for the past year. Until now I haven't been able to work. A job has been offered that I think I can handle okay and I'd like to take a crack at it. If I find I can't handle it, will I be able to get SSI checks again?"--Maryanne V. A--If she finds she can't handle the job, her monthly SSI checks will continue as usual. She should notify SS if and when she goes to work. MCC has been hosting the motorcycle safety project since 1978. m 1984, 86 community members were enrolled in the free course. And, due to a recent law change many more 16- and 17-year-olds are taking the motorcycle training classes in addition to their regular driver education courses, even though it is not required. The courses have been made available through the MCC Community Services Depart ment and since they began, 569 people have taken advantage of the training. "Of the students trained in 1984, 62 were men and 24 were women," said Gray. "And the majority of the students suc cessfully completed the cour se." Statistics show that professionally-trained riders are involved in fewer accidents. A spokesman for the NIU Motorcycle Safety Project adds, "A recent study of accidents involving motorcyclists found that 92 percent had no formal training." It is said that 40 percent of the poeple trained in the course may never go on to buy a motorcycle. "To me that says these people aren't in traffic learning by the 'survival method'," said Gray. "They're just not cut out for cycling, and that makes the streets safer for all of us." More information about the free motorcycle rider course is available by writing to the Motorcycle Safety Project, College of Continuing Education, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL, 60115, or by calling theliniversity at (800) "u 7 SUN. 1 FIRST INSTITUTE OF TRAVEL!
