"I like working in hospitals and clinics because I find them to be very dynamic environments," she said.' Barkal will be seeing clients on an outpatient basis through Easter Seals, as well as providing speech therapy services to local hospitals. She will also be working with preschoolers, age three to five, requiring speech therapy through the local Headstart pro gram. a Easter Seal's Nu-Voice Club, a s u p p o r t g r o u p f o r laryngestomees, will be meeting under Barkal's leadership. | "A speech therapist helps peo ple with any kind of communica tion problem," She said. Com munication abilities and deficien cies must be evaluated. Areas of treatment can include therapy for stuttering, language barriers resulting from develpmental delays, disease, or injury;, ar ticulation difficulties; voice weakness due to disease or excess tension, or hearing impairment. The therapist helps the patient improve his voice, speech, hear ing, reading, writing, or swallow ing by setting specific goals and working in a systematic, pro gressive manner in order to achieve them. Patients are also taught to com pensate for any communication skills that may have been lost. "We try to work Within the pa tient's own capabilities," Bprkal stressed. Barkal is a resident of Grystal Lake. Blair Barkal County task force concerned with costs for health care services The topic at a recent meeting of the McHenry Health Care Task Force was how one northern Il linois county makes health care available to its medically indigent citizens. Janet Marsh, chairperson of the task force, introduced Dean Dan- ner, director of the Stephenson County Board of Health, to the task force and representatives from the Health and Agriculture Committee of the county board. County board members included Ann Hughes, Lou Ann Majewski and Don Doherty. The task force is composed of citizens and representatives from hospitals, schools, civic groups, mental health and social service agen cies, and organizations for senior citizens and the disabled. Danner discussed and showed slides of the program initiated by his board in cooperation with health care providers, local government officials, and com munity leaders. The program con sists of health care services given to low income people of any age through a free primary care clinic. The clinic is designed to provide preventive services, early detection of disease, and patient education. He stressed that one of the most important factors con tributing to the success of the pro gram is support from health care providers, local government leaders, and community leaders. Task force members were im pressed with the high level of com munity support in Stephenson County as highlighted by the following facts: 35 out of the 37 doctors in the county are involved in the program; discounted drugs are available through most phar macies; and the local hospital per forms lab work and tests free of charge. In 1983 donated services were estimated at $24,000. The McHenry County Task Force is studying the availability of health care services to people in the county who cannot afford necessary health care services. Its purpose is to work towards solutions that make health care accessible to all citizens in need. For more information, contact Janet Marsh 338-8621 or Virginia Williams 344-0499.
