(815) 923-2371. ••-Antioch, Lake County: Hayden's Christmas Tree Farm, 42880 Hunt Club Road, north one and one third mile off Route 173 on Hunt Club Road. Scotch, red and whiteplnes available, but tree shoppers must call ahead to see if the farm is open: (312) 395-4127. In planning a trip to cut-your- own tree, the following sugges tions are helpful. "Since most farms have limited amounts of trees, it's wise to call ahead to see what's available," suggests Spangenberg. "Also determine what type and size of tree is needed before going, in cluding an accurate measurement of the space the tree will go in. Outdoors, trees tend to look smaller than they really are." Make sure to bring a saw and rope or twine to tie down the trunk. Most area farm operators have limited numbers of saws and few have rope or twine available. One final tip before leaving home is to make sure everybody is 'Christmas Seal People' have far-reaching services here dressed warm. Once the tree is cut, it is impor tant to do as much as possible to retain freshness. If it is a long drive home, wrapping the tree with an old bedsheet will help pre vent drying out due to wind action. When the tree gets home, make a fresh cut on the base and place in a bucket of water. Cool, sheltered locations are best. When it's time to bring the tree inside, make another fresh cut on the trunk. Keep the water basin of the stand full at all times, as a fresh tree will take up water rapidly. Check the level often, because once it dries up the vessels on the bottom of the tree trunk may shrink and not take up any more water. For additional information, con tact the McHenry County Exten sion Office at 789 McHenry Ave., P.O. Box 431, Woodstock, 60098 or call (815) 338-3737 or 338-4747. The millions of Americans who decorate their Christmas card envelopes and gift packages with Christmas Seals every year know they are participating in an endur- ing American tradition. Christmas Seal contributions are the primary means of support for the American Lung Association of DuPage and McHenry Counties' many programs. The oldest voluntary public hefilth organization in the U.S., the American Lung Association (The Christmas Seal People) was founded in 1904, 80 years ago. Its mission was to stamp out tuber culosis. Today, the American Lung Association along with a medical section, the American Thoracic Society, are dedicated to the control and prevention of all lung diseases and their related causes. The far-reaching program of the American Lung Association of DuPage and McHenry Counties include: family asthma programs for asthmatic children and their families; Camp Superkids • a camp for asthmatic children; anti-smoking education for grade school and high sc1t>'" students before they begin smoking cigarettes or marijuana; breathing clubs for people who have respiratory problems such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis or asthma; smoking cessation programs; research and profes sional education; initiating and supporting efforts to maintain clean air; and a large variety of brochures and booklets to help people understand their breathing problems. <} For more information about the services provided by the American Lung Association of DuPage and McHenry Counties, call the office in Woodstock at 338- 6675.
