Steve Peterson rte^Mter-ltoraM News Service WOODSTOCK - Last season, Marian Central's boys' basketball team started Nor thwest Suburban Conference play by losing to Marengo by 25 points. They ended the NWSC season tied for first. Friday night, the Hurricanes began NWSC play on the same no|,e with a 59-42 loss to Lake Zi^ich. The defeat, in large part against due to the long football season, left Coach Hans Rokus hoping history repeats itself. ?It's just a matter of we need mere practice. It will take a few mfcre games experience-wise anjd practice-wise. It will be similar to last year. I hope we stirt gelling by Christmas. That w$s the timetable last year and it looks like it will have to be the timetable this year," Rokus ac&led. •'We'll have to get Brian Truckenbrod in the lineup and, especially, we have to get Andy H^rtlieb out there. He's our floor leader, he'll givs us some of fensive punch." Offensive punch was JOHNSBURG r Continued from page 24) The usually reliable Nichols missed both free throws, and Marengo's Vince Evans took the rebound down court and scored to put Marengo ahead 47-38. "Every team has a breakdown sometime during the game, ours just came at the wrong time," Beck said. "Towards the end of the fourth quarter, it became a foul shooting contest."' IT WAS a contest the 'Hawks did not fare well in. They missed five charity tosses in the earlier quarters, in addition to the two missed by Nichols. "We just didn't make use of the opportunities we had," explained DuRei. "Marengo made the ad justments and we didn't." % One of the adjustments Marengo made was to put man-to- man pressure on the sharp- shooting Nichols. "I couldn't get open," Nichols said. "They put Evans on me and it was hard to get a shot off." OVERALL, Beck said he was pleased with his team's effort. "We made things happen tonight. Next time we'll make them hap pen more positively. We can im prove." Nichols led Johnsburg with 16 points, and Husek followed with eight. Tim Shine and Mike Tous- saint each had six points for the game. It was Toussaint's fourth quarter free throws and inside basket which kept JHS within striking distance in the fourth quarter. "I was especially pleased with the way we went to the boards," Beck said. "We must send everyone in to the boards and that ties down our running game. But we were there." » Husek and DuRei led the 'Hawks' rebounding efforts, with sJx caroms each. • Marengo's scoring strength oame from center Paul Williams, vf hose 16 points shared game-high scoring honors with Nichols. ! The Skyhawks, 2-2 and 0-1 in the Pforthwest Suburban, will host Marian Central Friday night. 4ohnsburg blasted the Hurricanes ip the Marian Central Thanksgiv ing Tournament. something the Hurricanes lacked in their league opener. Bill Hartmann and Tom Will did their best to aid the attack, but the two were largely the extent of it. Hartmann scored 12 points, 10 in the second half, and Will had 11, nine coming in the first half. The Hurricanes were in this one for only the first few minutes. A Chris Brown basket gave Marian a 7-7 tie midway through the first quarter. But that was the last time the hosts were close. Turnovers continued to plague Marian throughout the first half. The Hurricanes commiteed 10 miscues to just five for the Bears. Marian recovered in the third quarter, although the issue had long been decided. After baskets by Hartmann and A1 VanLanduyt, Lake Zurich called timeout with t52 left in the period, but the Bears took a 51-30 lead into the final quarter. The Bears' subs missed 10 of 13 fourth-quarter shots and the Hurricanes won the period, 12-8. The Hurricanes had troubles at the free throw line making only four of 10 while LZ was 9 of 14. Murin joined Tavaras in double figures with 13 points. Marian, (2-2, 0-1), next travels to Johnsburg, a team which defeated Marian in the Hurricanes' Thanksgiving Tournament. The Marian sophomores won, 49-37. Christopher's Men's Wear over came a /Seven-point halftime deficit, and outscored St. Regis by 25 points in the second half to win going away, 60-42. Frank Sexton scored 18 of his game-high 20 points during Christopher's second-half rally. Kevin Weiss had 10 points for St. Regis, all in the first half, and Joe Dehn also had 10. Todd Green was the only other player in double f i g u r e s , s c o r i n g 1 4 f o r Christopher's. The win raises Christopher's record to 2-0, while Regis drops to 0-2. Joe Meyers (15 points) and Jeff Meyers (14) added to a balanced winning effort. Greg Davis tallied 15 points for State Farm. J o h n n y M u r p h y ' s - T h e Gambler is now 1-1, while Henehan'sisO-2. Lady Skyhawks lose Platndetler-Herald Newt Service WOODSTOCK -- If you combined the two isolated stretches, Johnsburg's girls went more than an entire quarter without scoring, and most teams can't score in only three quarters and expect to win games. The Skyhawks didn't score the final 4:48 of the first quarter and then were shut out in the final 4:45 of the fourth quarter as Woodstock made some clutch free throws in the final period to post a 49-42 non-confernce win Monday night. Neither team threatened to blow the other out early in the contest as early-season jitters combined with poor passing led to a lackluster first half. After falling behind, 4-0, the Streaks points and held Johnsburg without a point the remaining 4:45 of the first quarter. The 6-1, 185-pound Podpora was the Vikings' backup quarter back. Used primarily as an option quarterback, Podpora rushed for 60 yards and tied for the team lead in touchdowns with three. He also completed five of 16 passes for 64 yards. He was one of only two freshman to see regular playing time on this year's offen sive unit.
